A COUPLE OF REAL swell peo-
ple . . . that's movie stars Bob
Cummings and Eva Marie Saint.
IT WAS MY PLEASURE to be
with them both and learn the
down-to-earthness of these nice
folks . . . When Bob's oldest son,
Robert Jr., was born, his godfather,
Jack Benny, gave him an 80-year•
old quarter-size violin with a silver
medallion that read, "To Robert
Richard Cummings, with fond
hopes that he shall become as
great a concert violinist as his
godfather." One time G e or g e
Burns, "Bob Cummings Show"
partner, was told, "You know, of
course, that Jack Benny is Bob
Cummings' son's godfather." . . .
"Of course," replied George. "Why
.do you think he wears a rhinestone
yarmelke?"
BORN CHARLES CLARENCE
Robert Orville Cummings at
Joplin, Mo., in the Ozarks, Bob
never knew anti-Semitism existed
until he reached New York as a
20-year-old ... His doctor father
and Rabbi Isadore Rippins of
Joplin were close friends and
had a pact between them . .
Dad taught the rabbi Latin, and
he in turn, gave 'young Bob He-
brew lessens . Bob's father, a
physician and surgeon, delivered
him at birth ... and a few hours
later, his mother, an ordained
minister, christened him.
ORVILLE WRIGHT WAS his god-
father, and Bob soloed in 1927 in
a plane that, like himself, is very
much airworthy today . . In 1931,
discovering that the only demand
was for young English actors, he
became Blade Stanhope Conway,
England's youngest actor, author,
manager, director and producer.
. . . Only two years later, in 1933,
after juvenile leads in New York
prOductions, "Blade Conway!' be-
came the leading man of "The
Ziegfeld Follies" at the Winter
Garden Theater on Broadway . .
The star was Fannie Brice, and
Bob, still masquerading as- the
India-born British subject, was an
immediate smash hit singing the
hit tune of the show, "I Like the
Looks of You" . . . From there
came eventual stardom in 111
Hollywood movies ("King's Row,"
"Princess O'Rourke," "Dial M for
Murder," "The Carpetbaggers,"
etc., etc., etc. . . . and the award
winning network TV series, "The
Bob Cummings Show."
EVA MARIE SAINT had never
met Bob Cummings before . . •
although her 15 years in Holly-
wood have been great ones . . .
The two got acquainted on the
same plane to Detroit, and when
Charles Canvasser and I met
them, they were like old bud-
dies . . . Remember Eva win-
ning an academy award for best
supporting actress in "On the
Waterfront" with Marlon Brando?
. . . Or how about "A Hatful of
Rain," "That Certain Feeling,"
"North by Northwest," "The
Russians Are Coming," "Exo-
dus," etc.
HER TV DIRECTOR husband
Jeffrey Hayden is Jewish, and
Hebrew lessons Eva took at home
for her own use came in handy
when she and Jeffrey went to
Israel with their two chilrlren in
1961 . . . It was to make "Exodus"
with Paul Newman, and although
most of her time was spent in
Haifa, Eva hopes to someday re-
turn to Jerusalem . . . Eva looked
anything but a great movie star
as she did "The Alley Cat" hop to
Hal Gordon's bouncy rhythms .. .
She was more like a little girl
wide-eyed with happy-go-lucky ex-
citement.
