Paul Zuckerman Pledges to Romanian Jewry
That American Brethren Will Not Forget

The nine Detroiters who recently
celebrated Simhat Torah in Buch-
arest, Romania, with the .congre-
gation of the Choral Temple, re-
assured their Romanian brethren
that the miles which separate them
do not diminish their unity as Jews
nor their responsibility to each
other.
Speaking before the congrega-
tional worshipers, which included
the members of the United Jewish
Appeal Study Mission, Paul Zuck-
erman, national chairman of the
UJA, stated:
"Ich red nicht Romanian, Ich red
nicht Yiddish, nicht e gitte Yid-
dishe, Zult mir einschuldigen. As
die losen mir haben an iber zetzer.
Ich vill Rabbi Rosen, chief rabbi
of the congregation, zu zein mein
iber zetzer.
(I don't speak Romanian, I don't
speak Yiddish—not a good Yid-
dish. Forgive me. I must have a
translator. I want Rabbi Rosen,
chief rabbi of the congregation, to
be my translater.)
"I greet you on behalf of the
men and women who are here to-
day with me in this beautiful syna-
gogue, who are members of the
UJA Study Mission, because it
proves that time and distance do
not separate one from another. I
also bring you greetings from all
the Jews in America. My father
was born in Romania and but for
a trick of fate, I would be sitting
downstairs with you, and somebody
else would be making a speech to
you from up here.
"I also would like to express
my thanks to the Romanian au-
thorities for being considerate
and compassionate and under-
standing enough to let you prac-
tice your religion in your own
way amino live up to your tra-
ditions and your heritage.
"We met with the minister of
religious affairs this morning, and
we had a chance to thank him
personally for this. Yes, the rabbi
said that America is the largest,
the strongest and the richest Jew-
ish community in the world, so we
accept that responsibility and we
live up to it.
"We know that being in that
position it is our responsibility to
do all we can for Jews no matter
where they are, not only in Israel,
but in Romania and all over the
world. We, the Jews of America,
were very fortunate not to have
had to live through the Holocaust
of Auschwitz and Dachau. We did
not lose our lives, nor the lives of
our loved ones, and for this we
feel that we must show that much
more gratitude.
"To those Jews who have lived
through the agonies of those days,
we pledge that we will continue
to bear this responsibility and to
increase it as the days go by. I
say this—that you are fortunate in
having a leader like Rabbi Rosen
here in Romania and for this I
give you mazal tov.
"Let us pray that this Simhat
Torah will bring shalom to Jews
all over the world, in Romania, in
Israel, wherever Jews may be .. .
"Shalom and God bless you."

LETTER BOX

George Pierrot Recalls
Era of Naguib in Egypt

Editor, The Jewish News:
I very well remember my after-
noon with General Naguib there in
Cairo. He was much too liberal for
Nasser and associates. He wanted
to return to a complete democracy
and felt Egypt was ready for that.
Nasser favored dictatorship.
It was widely believed that
Nasser would have liked to have
him assassinated, but was afraid
to because of his great popularity.
Further, he was born in the Su-
dan and Nasser hoped that the
future plebiscite would bring the
Sudan under Egyptian rule. It
didn't, as you remember.
