This Week in Jewish History (From the files of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency) 40 Year= Ago This Week: 1930 JERUSALEM (MS) — Open- ings are available in Israel in the fields of applied science and spe- cial technology, but there is a surplus of specialists in the hu- manities and in the social sciences, according to Arieh Goral, director of Israel's ministry of labor. It also said that while there had to be a "pulling up" of immigration, it would outlay up to $12,500,000 to settle 10,000 families in Palestine. The National Socialists made big gains in German municipal elections. Abraham Wolff, who came to the United States penniless 45 years earlier, left a $1,000,000 estate. Buckley a Delightful Opponent, His Views Interesting to Know William F. Buckley, Jr., is a de- lightful fellow. He is good to listen to, he is charming—he is ultra- conservative. He has written a book —"The Governor Listeth—A Book of Inspired Political Observations." published by Putnam—and it is worth reading to get the views of a critic who has much to say about American and world affairs. He believes that "the assassina- tion of George Lincoln Rockwell brought an end to the American Nazi Party." Did it? He believes that "the assassination of Faisal brought republicanism, if that is the word for it, to Iraq." Did it? He makes lots of interesting comments on many things. For instance: "In 1936, the Olympic games were held in Berlin, and the government of Adolf Hitlei, it is generally conceded, was for- tified by the prestige of the games. Now Poland's Communist hierarchy, thrashing out against the rioters, starts pogrom-talking against the Jews, those pathetic few who are left after Hitler's ravages; 235 English MPs protest anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union. DeGaulle, Prof. Raymond Aron insists, has renewed anti. Semitism on a continental scale. Would Secretary Rusk scold the American Jew who refuses to patronize Air France or to com- mit his company to trading with Poland or the Soviet Union? Or the Gentile who wishes to support the Jew?" (The book was written in Rusk's days). There is a splendid chapter on "The Great Week — June, 1967," subtitled "Israel to the Rescue of the United States," in which the Johnson position of that month is reviewed, the Jewish role explained and the new confrontation with Russia indicated. And the good- humored Buckley treats the issue with kindness. But be is unkind to and critical of the ADL — following here the ultra-conservative line — when he writes: "The Anti-Defamation League has a genius for vulgarizing any Friday, lisirember 13,1!70-21 THE MINOR 'JEWISH NEWS Israel Needs Scientists, Glutted With Lawyers --- SEND FOR FREE RECIPE BOOKLET TODAY I-- PILLAR ROCK SOCKEYE RED SALMON, Nefco, Pier 89. Arabs Criticize Their Governments, but Not Ready to Accept Israel INDIANAPOLIS (ZINS) — At the recent annual convention of the Organization of Arab Students, Dr. Abdo Elkholi, sociology professor at.the University of Northern Illi- nois, criticized the lack of personal and political freedom in much of the Arab world. The professor declared that it is impossible for scentists to func- tion in a climate of repression. Greater personal freedom, he said, is also a precondition to an ulti- mate Arab victory over Israel. He said the average Arab lacks self-respect and trust in his lead- ers under present conditions. Many scientists and professionals remain abroad in self-imposed exile, Prof. Elkholi added. SELECTED GROUPS MEN'S SUITS Reg. To $145 There was agreement with Dr. Elkholi's criticism of Arab total- itarianism, but many deplored the practice of self-exile. Dele- gates argued that there was a duty to work for change by re- maining in one's home country. Finer Men's . Dr. Elkholi stated that if there were some 10,000,000 to 20,000,000 Arabs in the United States, such a force would counter Zionist in- fluence. Attendance at the confer- ence was small, not exceeding 35- 40 persons. Although the group comprised intellectual Arabs, opposed to total- itarianism, there was no sign of readiness to accept Israel's legitimacy and right to exist. Those who spoke in opposition to their own repressive governments continually referred to the "tem- porary loss of Palestine." Israel was regarded as an "ob- stacle to Arab unity" and "an outpost of imperialism helping to maintain rulers such as the Shah subject it touches. The organization was originally founded to guard against anti-Semitism. In recent years it has gone in for the big- think, taking firm positions on any number of social issues that have - nothing whatever to do with anti- of Iran and King Hussein."
