Hospital With 'Heart'

Sinai Offqs Gift of Life to Ailing Boy

Young Ricardo DeFreitas has
been given, literally, a new lease
on life, thanks to a team of doctors
at Sinai Hospital who recently per-
formed a $30,000-$40,000 opera-
tion on the boy's defective heart—
at no charge.
Ricardo, 15, was brought to
Sinai from his home in Port-of-
Spain, Trinidad, to undergo a dif-
ficult four-hour operation led by
Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz, the first
American surgeon to transplant
a heart.
Dr. Kantrpwitz also was the in-
ventor of the implantable pace-
maker, a device that now is help-
ing Ricardo to live an almost nor-
mal life.
Dr. Melvyn Rubenfire, chief of
cardiology at Sinai, said Ricardo
was taken as a "staff patient,"
which means the entire treat-
ment is donated_ The team had

of the heart—a large hole and a
faulty valve.
Additionally, oral surgeons spent
10 days pulling bad teeth and fill-
ing others, to make Ricardo's
mouth as sterile as possible to re-
duce the chances of germs con-
taminating the patch being put in
his heart.
Doctors in Trinidad were not
equipped to repair the damaged
heart. A social worker spent two
years raising $2,000 to send Ri-
cardo and his mother to America
and finding a hospital willing to
patch the hole.
Had the operation not taken
place, Ricardo probably would
have lived only another six months.

Blood Bank at Emanu-El

The Oak Park Council of Com-
munity Organizations will hold its
annual blood bank 3-8:45 p.m.
Tuesday at Temple Emanu-El.
All Oak Park residents are eli-
gible to borrow from the blood

from smoking before making a do-
nation.
