,Brith Milah Class Inaugurated in New York; Emphasized as a Mitzva
NEW YORIE--Rabbi Leo Jung.
president of the Brith Milah Board
of New York, announces that appli-
cations are being accepted for the
new class of students in the Brith
Milah School conducted at Mount
Sinai Hospital, New York. He
stated:
"Brith Mb& is one of the cardi-
nal =Rivet of Judaism, yet, of
late, this commandment has been
challenged. To be certain virtually
all Jewish male children are cir-
cumsised, but the circumcision is
not always performed in accord-
ance with Jewish Law. To inaugu-
rate a Jewish child into the Cove-
nant of Abraham, it is essential
that the circumcision be done as
a religious act. This requires that
the mohel be an observant Jew
and that the Brith be performed
on the eighth day unless the phy-
sician orders a postponement dui
to health reason. Under no condi-
tions may a child be circumcised
before the eighth day. Our people
have undergone tremendous perse-
cutions to fulfill this command-
ment. To violate it for mere con-
venience desecrates our Holy
Torah and the sacrifices of our
forefathers.
"The Soviet government denies
Jewish children this basic and
fundamental right and many of our
young parents in the Free World
deny their children the proper per-
formance of this mitzva.
"We have therefore organized
the school to maintain the high
standard of the certified Mohelim
of the Brith Milah Board of New
York and we pray that it will
encourage parents to have the
Brith performed properly.
"To qualify for the Brith Milah
School, the student must possess a
good Jewish and secular education.
He must, of course, be an observ-
ant Jew."
Classes are conducted at Mount
Sinai Hospital on Monday and
Wednesday evenings. In addition to

the didactic lectures the student

erating room.
The students receive instructions
from physicians, • inehelim and
rabbis. The physicians include
leading urologists, pediatricians,
and hematologists.
The courses in science include
anatomy, physiology, embryology,
microbiology, asepsis, antisepsis,
hematology and clinical correla-
tion conferences. The religious
classes give instructions in funda-
mentals of circumcision, Talmud,
Codes and the Responsa Literature.
The student is afforded the op-
portunity of studying in Mount
Sinai Hospital and Beth Israel
Medical Center. The Jewish Me-
mortal Hospital and Brookdale
Medical Center also cooperate in
this program.
Following the formal course of
study there is an internship period
at which time a teacher accom-
panies the graduate student at
circumcisions.

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Under the
impact of defense needs and with
the help of Jewish scientists
brought in from abroad, Israel's
armaments industry is proving
capable -of turning out modern
weapons systems that are superior
to their foreign counterparts and
better adapted to local conditions,
if not always cheaper to make.
This picture of Israel's arma-
ments industry was drawn for
Hnesset members by Prof. Ar-
yeh Dvoretzky, chief science of-
ficer of the Israeli Defense Min-
istry. Prof. Dvoretzky said the
defense research establishment
has succeeded in bringing many
Jewish scientists to the country
and engaging them in defense
research. He said that outstand-
ing men between the ages of
30-40 are being sought and no
expense should be spared in the
effort.
Prof. Dvoretzky claimed that
Israel has developed new weapons
systems in a much shorter time
than the 7-10 years it uElially takes
abroad to develop a new tank or
missile. He said Israel has been
able to rehabilitate old tanks and
equip them with modern instru-
ments and that on several occa-
sions has manufactured for itself
certain advanced weapons that it
had been barred from purchasing
abroad.
Prof. Dvoretzky said, however,
that Israel was not entirely self- Soviets Sending Goods

agreement to this effect was
reached between Russia and Tur-
key in October, it was learned here.
According to the agreement,
goods 'destined for Iraq and Syria
may pass through prescribed routes
on Turkish territory. While there
was no information as to the nature
of cargo permitted to go through
Turkey, it was pointed out here
that even trucks by themselves are
of a strategic nature. There is,
however, no way to check the
