Rabbi Appeals for Supporters
of Israel GIs' Welfare Assn.

PROPOSED SOLDIERS' HOUSE IN BEERSHEBA

Moved at the sight of young men
who willingly put their lives on the
line for the sake of Israel, a Detroit
rabbi has taken up their cause and
is encouraging the formation of
friends' groups for the Association
for Welfare of Soldiers in Israel.
The association, which seeks to
build a soldiers' house in Beer-
sheba, tends to the welfare of fight-
ing men on the borders as well as
those who are disabled.
When Rabbi A. Irving Schnipper
of Cong. Beth Moses was in Israel
with his wife this summer, be was
urged by friends there to contribute
unspent dollars to the association
before leaving for home.
Upon his return, he won the
approval of the synagogue board
to make a High Holy Day appeal
among his congregants, and to
date $1,380 has been raised to-
ward a room In the Beersheba
soldiers' house. Each room costs
$2,500.
Noting that the association is
supported by private contributions
and not by the Israel government,
Rabbi Schnipper urged that circles

o fassociation friends be formed,
with each member contributing an-
nual dues of $25. Contributions of
greater and lesser amounts would
be gratefully accepted, Rabbi
Schnipper added. For information,
call the Beth Moses office, KE
4434.
The association provides rest
camps, at which frontline soldiers
can relax for a week off duty;
soldiers' houses in the cities, simi-
lar to the American USOs but addi-
tionally offering opportunities for
high school education; and various
services for soldiers recovering in
hospitals. The association also has
erected bus shelters for boys await-
ing transport to and from base.

Israeli volunteers who belong to
the Soldiers' Welfare Association
also perform a unique service of
"adoption"—in which foster pa-
rents adopt units, provide television
sets, radios and other items for the
soldiers stationed at distant out-
posts. Gift parcels and letters from
school children, as well as enter-
tainers, lighten the emotional load
of the fighting men.

Chaplains Get Together
to Service Institutions

CHICAGO (JTA)—An ecumenical
association of chaplains embracing
the Catholic, Protestant and Jew-
ish faiths has been established for
the state of Illinois according to
an announcement by the Chicago
Board of Rabbis, one of the found-
ing sponsors and a participant in
the association.
The new organization, called the
Illinois State Association of Chap-
lains, includes clergymen of the
three faiths who perform pastoral
duties at state institutions operated
by the departments of mental
health, child and family services
and the department of correction.
