Period of Societal Upheaval Explored
at AJCommittee Midwest Parley

MILWAUKEE — Just as our na-
ton is in a period of rapid changes
and societal upheaval, so, too are
our college campuses which mir-
ror and reflect the world around
them, said Dr. William Haber,
special adviser to the president of
the University of Michigan, at a
American Jewish Committee's
tel. The banquet was the major
community-wide banquet of the
Midwest Regional Advisory Coun-
cil conference, Saturday evening
in Milwaukee's Pfister Tower Ho-
tel. Detroiter Lewis Grossman is
chairman of the Midwest council.
According to Dr. Haber, a large
number of college students would
dike to see the "establishment"
remain as it is, becoming part
of that "establishment" when
they graduate. However, signifi-
cant numbers of students are anx-
ious to change, or completely re-
structure the status quo. It is from
these students that much of the
revolution rhetoric and actions em-
anate.
Bertram H. Gold, executive vice
president of the American Jew-
ish Committee, said at another
session that much of AJC's con-
cern with the new emerging forms
of potential and actual anti-Semi-
tism, according to Gold, comes not
just from the changes in the socie-
tal rules or norms, but from -the
violence being employed to force
such change. This violence, which
has total disregard for those rules
which safeguard the minority,
are a potential threat to the well-
being of the Jewish community.
A serious threat for American
Jewry, observed Gold, are those
elements within the black revolu-
tion which closely align them-
selves with third world and pan-
Arab forces, who see Israel as an
extension of the "imperialistic
United States" and American
Jews as the "helpmates" of the
"anti-Arab" Israelis.
In speaking on "Israel and
the Propaganda War," George
E. Gruen, Israel and Middle
East specialist of the foreign
affairs department of the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee ex-
ploded some "old myths" that
exist in relationship to the Mid-
dle East.
According to Gruen, the idea
that Nasser was a stabilizing in-
fluence in the Middle East, was
not a fact, but pure myth. It was
Nasser who supported revolution-
ary movements in Algiers, Congo,
Kenya and within the Arab world
to incite masses to overthrow
kings in Iraq, Jordan, Kiwait and
Saudia Arabia.
According to Gruen, there is now
an opportunity for moderate lead-
ership among the Palestinians to
assert itself.
Gruen stated it is a gross over-
simplicatlon, espoused by some
well-meaning people, to say the
whole problem could be settled
"if only the Israelis, or the Amer-

lean government talked directly
with the Palestinians." This would
assume that there have been no
discussions, which is false. There
have been many informal con-
tacts with Palestine on both the
East and West Bank.

Spanish Dictionary
Purged of Bias

BUENOS AIRES — The most
authoritative and prestigious dic-
tionary of the Spanish language,
that issued by the Spanish Acad-
emy, has been cleansed of its
terms derogatory to Jews and
Judaism.
Credited with the achievement
are an Argentine Jew, Luis Car-
duner and the Mexican division of
the World Jewish Congress, head-
ed by Dr. Morris Goldman, as well
as a noted Latin American lexi-
cographer, Dr. Later Shulman.
Another behind the changes was
Fr. Felix Restrepa of Bogota, Co-
lombia, who in 1960 at a conclave
of language academies urged the
cleansing of the book.
When one Spaniard, then Spain's
ambassador to Syria, objected to
the changes in definitions because
other groups might want the same,
Fr. Restrepa said: "Fine. we also
ought to change our attitude to-
ard the Moors."
Among the offensive definitions
was that of Pharisaic, defined as
"hypocritical."
