Hebrew U. to Honor Work on E. Europe Jewry
JERUSALEM—The first major
publication of the Hebrew Univer-
sity's' Folklore Research Center
will be published this month as
part of the institute's expanding
activities.
Under the joint leadership of Dr.
Dov Noy and Dr. Issachar Ben-
Ami, the center, which is part of
the university's Institute of Jewish
Studies, is engaged in many re-
search projects designed to docu-
ment the diverse facets of Jewish
tradition and culture.
Founded in 1956, the center be-
came fully operational in 1967 with
the decision to transfer the Haifa
Municipality Israel Folktale Ar-
chives to Jerusalem.
The moving spirit behind the
archives' collection was Dr. Noy,
former Warburg Fellow and senior
lecturer in Hebrew and folk lit-
erature at the Hebrew University.
Under the title "Folklore Re-
search Center Studies," a series of
publications owill begin with a 600-
page annual containing 30 articles
written by leading Israeli scholars
in folklore and allied fields, to-
gether with some contributions in
English by researchers from
abroad.
Much attention has been paid
to the English summaries of He-
brew papers, since one of the pub-
lication's prime aims is to promote
co-operation between Jewish and
non-Jewish folklorists all over the
world. The volume as a whole is
dedicated to Prof. Joseph Rivlin
on the occasion of his 80th birth-
day.
The annual's second volume,
Fridley, Nosier 6, 1970-43
THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
planned for publication next year,
will contain an annotated collection
of Yiddish folksongs recorded
nearly 40 years ago in Galicia.
To date, the center, in conjunc-
tion with the Haifa Municipality
Museum of Ethnology and Folk -
lore, has recorded some 8,800 folk-
tales and it envisages publication
of 26 separate volumes of folk-
tales, with one volume apiece de-
voted to each immigrant ethnic
group in Israel. In addition to the
tales, recorded in their original
language, each volume will contain
parallel translations in Hebrew
and English.
A man occupied with public or
other important business cannot,
and need not, attend to spelling.—
