Jewry's Health Compiled. by Aaron Goldfarb, for Operation Truth, Inc. Salvarsan, the cure for syphilis, was discovered by Ehrlich. The test taken to find out if one has syphilis is named after its dis- coverer—the Wasserman Test. The original cure for gonorrhea was established by Neissner. Digitalis used for heart disease was the discovery of Ludwig Traube. Cocaine used to combat the pain of toothache was the work of Solomon Strickers. The team of Widal and Weill discovered the cure for typhus. The research work of Minlcowsky brought about insulin, the remedy for diabetes. Spiro and Eilege de- veloped pyramiden and antipyrin so necessary to ameliorate head- aches .To subdue convulsions Oscar Liebereich brought forth choral- hydrate. Freud was the originator of psychoanalysis. To cure diphtheria Bela Schick invented the test bearing his name. Robert Bhrani, Nobel Prize winner bas saved hundreds of thousands of lives with his method of treating ear and brain damage. Another Nobel Prize winner Otto Levi had research results that have restored sanity to countless numbers whose nerve systems broke down and were sent to insane asylums. The discoverer of the special nutritional value of using vitamins was still another Jew, Kasimir Funk. Not too long ago the Jew, Jonas Salk discovered the vaccine for polio that has already saved crippling hundred of thousands—the antipo- lyomelitis vaccine. The discoverer of streptomycin—the wonder drug against the killing disease of tuber- culosis, was Zalman Waxman of Rutgers University. The program was organized by the National Jewish Welfare Board in cooperation with the Jewish Agency for Israel. After spending about three weeks in Washington, Orland will fill scholar-in-residence posts in Wil- mington,. Del., and Baltimore. Gifts to Mankind —Volitear, Barangaj, Otto War- burg, Judassehn, Bruno Block and Unnd—the great neurologists Man- dle, Oppenheim, Kronecfer and Benedict—the giants among lung specialists Frawnkel, among sur- - ;, Dr. Israel and the leading anatomist—Menle. In short, any- one failing -to respect and love Jews should steer clear of their discoveries and fittingly and prop- erly remain afflicted with syphilis, gonorrhea, heart disease, tooth- ache, headache, typhus, diabetes, convulsions, mental disorders, dip- theria, brain damage, undernour- ishment, infantile paralysis, tuber- culosis and virtually all other diseases. Every name mentioned has been that of a Jew. Is it any wonder that in relation to numbers no people on earth are close seconds to Jews among Nobel Prize winners? Is it any wonder that no group so small has done so much for all as have the Jews? Soviet Jewish Writers Comment on M.E. Peace LONDON (JTA) — A group of Soviet Jewish writers have called upon Jewish writers in other countries to help further Arab- Israeli friendship and have ex- pressed satisfaction with the cease fire now in effect in the Middle East. That public commentary on a foreign policy matter, rare for ordinary Soviet citizens, appeared in the current edition of Sovietish Heimland, officially authorized Jewish periodical, which arrived here. The writers said, "We call upon Jewish writers the world over to help create an atmosphere of friendship between Israel and the Arab nations. Millions of men, wo- men and children have a vital in- terest in peace in the Middle East and they include Jews as well as Arabs." The writers said they supported the cease fire because it "opens the way for a just peace between Arab countries and Israel based on the Security Council resolution of Nov. 22, 1967. Among the signers were such members of the Soviet Communist establishment as Aaron Vergelis, Abraham Gontar, Motel Grubian, Shika Griz and Sonia Frei. The group also included Meir Yellin, Hillel Alexandrov, Mark Razummy and Z. Wendroff, who are not in- volved in politics. NEW YORK (JTA)—Mrs..Max Schenk, president of Hadassah, has criticized the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry as being intransigent, misguided and immature. In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the head of the Women's Zionist Organization of America expressed outrage at the SSSJ's "storming the building" to "tell us what to do" about the plight of Soviet Jewry. "They are very young kids with very decent and honorable inten- tions, but a little misguided," she declared, adding: "Certainly youth isn't going to tell us what to do. I don't have to prove Hadassah's interests in all matters that con- cern world Jewry." Glenn Richter, New York co- ordinator for the SSSJ, acknowl- edged to the JTA that a dozen members insisted on meetings without appointments. In separate meetings they presented their case for increased Hadassah activity on Soviet Jewry to Mrs. Rose Matzldn, bead of the Zionist affairs com- mittee, and to Mrs. Schenk. Richter said the students pre- sented "suggestions," not "de- mands," similar to those presented June 26, to Bnai Brith, which called the police to evict the SSSJers. The suggestions were for an "internal committee to insure massive attendance to rallies;" the allotment of "meaningful funds" to the American and New York Jewish Conferences on Soviet Jewry, of which Hadassah • • . Poland's Few Jews Mark Lonely Holiday LONDON (JTA) — There was virtually no celebration of the High Holy Days or Sukot by the few re- maining Jews in Poland, according to word reaching here from War- saw. The only religious services were those organized by the residents of Jewish homes for the aged in Warsaw and Lodz on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Unlike past years when many younger Jews from outside attend- ed the services at the homes, the worship this year was confined to the inmates. Most young and middle aged Jews have left Poland during the past two years in the wake of an officially inspired anti-Jewish cam- paign instituted by the regime In 1968 under the guise of anti- Zionism. Jews were purged from virtually every public office and respon- sible position, especially in the communications media. Most Po- lish Jews have emigrated to West- ern European countries. The Yiddish State Theater in Warsaw opened its season directly after Yom Kippur as it has done traditionally for years. But there was nothing new in the repertoire, which consists of adaptations of the classical Yiddish writers and old mainstays of the Yiddish thea- ter, such as Peretz Hirshbein and Abraham Goldfaden. The holidays were ignored by local authorities; some of whom had been invited by the Jewish clubs in Warsaw, Lodz and Bialy- stok. The Gensza St. cemetery, the only Jewish institution in War- saw that the Nazis did not have time to destroy, is in a state of serious disrepair, filled with litter and overgrown with weeds, the Yiddish weekly Folkstimme re- ported from Warsaw. The periodical, a publication of the Jewish Cultural and Social Association, attributed the poor state of the burial ground to the fact that most Jews have left Poland. It called for volunteers among the remaining Jews of War- saw to clean up the cemetery and restore it. According to Folkstimme, it is still a major attraction for tourists because it contains the graves of many prominent Jews, among them the writer I. L. Peretz and Dr. Ludwig Zamenhoff, the in- ventor of Esperanto. Is a charter member; the regular distributiaa of "Soviet Jewry action programs" to local Hades- salt chapters; and the appoint- ment of a full-time administrator for Soviet Jewry problems. Richter said that although Ha- dassah had done "a little bit more" about the problem than other Jew- ish organizations, it could do much more. He said the meetings were "at times a. bit tense." Mrs. Schenk, noting that it is not her policy to call the police in such situations, told the JTA that Hadassah does have an internal committee that deals in part with Soviet Jewry and that it is headed by a full-time professional, Miriam Taub. The Hadassah president said she resented the students' demanding of her, "What are you doing? Did you march?" She said she replied: "I don't have to account to you for what Hadassah does. We don't take di- rection from you. You as youth have no right to come and see us. You should be involved, but work through the organized channels. There are conventional ways of doing it" But Mrs. Schenk said she would be willing to meet again with the students on the recommendation of Rabbi Herschel Schacter, chairman of the American Jewish Conference on Soviet Jewry. "We are con- stantly in touch with Rabbi Shac- ter," she added. Mrs. Schenk said the SSSJ mem- bers acted as if "Soviet Jewry is going to the gas chamber because of Hadassah." "If everybody minded their own business," the Duchess said, in a hoarse growl, "the world would go round a deal faster than it does." —Lewis Carroll.
