Jewish Commune Opens
at Berkeley Campus
OAKLAND, Calif. (JVA) — The
first federation - assisted Jewish
student cooperative is now operat-
ing in Berkeley, according to the
Jewish Welfare Federation of Ala-
meda and Contra Costa Counties.
The Havurat Ha-rush opened Sept.
15 with some 20 Jewish students.
The federation "Observer" re-
ported that the participants hope
that, by living together, they can
bring about a revitalization of
Judaism for themselves and set an
example for other Jews in the
Berkeley campus area. They plan
an intensive curriculum including
Midrash, Talmud, Humash, Jew-
ish philosophy and literature, mod-
ern Hebrew and Jewish attitudes
on war and peace. Facilities at the
commune are kosher, the federa-
tion reported.
