Barbara Ginn: Is Wife of Marvin Greenberg LETTER BOX Rita Starr Is Engaged to Wed Barry Galison Arab Refugees- Ganie of Numbers Editor, The Jewish News: In your July 17 paper, you pro- tested against the Washington Post's use of 750,000 as the num- ber of Arab refugees from what later became Israel. You went too far in the opposite direction when you said that "even the extreme Arabists admit that only about 450,000 Arabs left—fled from—what was then Palestine." The question you ask applies to you: "Why exaggerate . . .?" James Michener, in an article in the Sept. 27 New York Times Mag- azine, says "A group of impartial Quakers from America, Canada and England" accepts the 750,000 figure. He himself says that some years ago, he "studied every avail- able document on this subject and concluded that the total could not have been more than 600,000." So why does he plug as 'impartial" the larger figure? I had trouble with the N.Y. Times ("The Kingdom and the Power") when they used the num- ber 725,000. When I questioned this, they gave me Den Peretz as their authority. When I questioned him, he gave me a statistical table from a UN report as his source. I looked at the same table and came up with a different answer. Since, it turns out, Dr. Peretz participated in the Quaker study, I presume his Quaker colleagues are more impressed with his statistical competence than I and ethers are. The Second Progress Report of the United Nations Mediator, Oct. 18, 1948, stated: "Estimates made by Arab authorities - reach totals of between 740,000 and 7110,000; .checks made by officers of Disaster Relief Project have failed to substantiate such figures." The estimate of the UN mediator,, on this date, was 472,000. What's more impartial than that? Yours sincerely, SIDNEY KORETZ 751 S. Florida Arlington, Va. It upsets me that our Jewish youth who attend Wayne Univer- sity had to decide whether to go to the first day of the fall term or the synagogue . . I ask our Jewish leaders why do we allow this to happen each year? . . Isn't it time for this community to_ form an educational committee to sit with presidents of univer- sities on this subject? If we start now we can prevent this from hap- pening again next year. MRS. SARA LEE SEGEL 23677 Merrill Southfield Couples Go Halloweening The Young n' Marrieds of Cong.
