An Israeli Gesture That Took Root

By ELIAHU SALPETER

(Copyright 1970. JTA, Inc.)

The was a most important lesson
for Washington in the first week
of the shooting war in Jordan:
American warnings, when clearly
emphasized by ready m ilit a r Y
power, are still taken seriously by
Moscow and are a very effective
instrument of foreign policy.
The war would have been over-
with relatively few casualties-the
next day, had the Syrians not
intervened. They sent a few scores
of their Soviet tanks across the
border. The tanks were beaten by
the Jordanians but the Syrian move
revived the flagging spirits of the
terrorists. When the Syrians, next
day, sent in 250 Russian tanks and
occupied the north Jordan town of
Irbid, the terrorists were told (in
broadcasts beamed from Damas-
cus) that the advancing armored
units will soon "liberate" Amman,
and the street fighting started
anew in all bitterness.
For a while it looked as if yester-
day's victory would become tomor-
row's defeat. Hussein could not
match 250 Syrian tanks, particu-
larly if the King continued to keep
his forces split. Actually, Israeli
military observers saw in this divi-
sion one of his main weaknesses.
In part, it was unavoidable: as
long as he had to suspect that the
Iraqi troops stationed in Jordan
(ostensibly to protect her against
Israel) might also move against
him, Hussein had to keep part of
his tanks in reserve to face such
a possibility. On the other hand,
there was no reason to tie up
another considerable part of the
Jordan armor vis-a-vis Israel, as
Hussen well knew. Indeed, as soon
as the large-scale Syrian invasion
became known, the Jordan army
began to move its armored units
from the "Israel front" to the
north-via the highway along the
Israel border which now was the

safest route in the kingdom of
Jordan.
Simultaneously, Jordan sent up
half of her tiny air force-12 planes
to be exact - which delivered a
smashing blow at the Syrian

armor. Next day, the Syrian tanks
swiftly retreated from Irbid and
other "liberated" areas, leaving
the terrorists to face the Jordanian
troops alone.
When the Syrian tanks rolled into
Jordan en mass, it was reasonable
to assume that they would be
"covered" by MIGs of- the Syrian
Air Force, as elementary military
logic requires. So, as a natural
protective move if nothing else,
Israel sent her own planes on con-
stant patrol along the border in
the vicinity of the Syrian-Jordan
battle area.
It is, probably, a good guess
that the Syrians--seeing the Is-

raeli jets on their radars-thought
It wiser not to send up their own
planes which could have, by their
sheer numbers, overwhelmed the
score. of Jordanian fighters at-
tacking the Syrian tanks.

all-out attack, throwing in more
armor, more infantry and also the
air force. There were some reports
in the Arab press hinting that at
least part of the Damascus mili-
tary junta wanted to take the lat-
ter course. But Moscow probably
told the Syrians not to expect any
Soviet aid if they got involved with
Israel and badly beaten again. The
speed with which such advice was
given this time (as against June

1967) might well have had to do

with the warning to Syria sounded
by Washington- and the move-
ments of the Sixth Fleet toward
the eastern shores of the Mediter-

ranean to back up those warnings.
For local purposes, Israel's de-
terrent power is effective in the
Middle East, sometimes without

firing a single shot. And to prevent

direct or indirect Soviet interven-
tion, it is enough for Washington
to make the possibility of American
intervention even remotely credible.

`Paratroopers Carry On
Heritage of Maccabeans'

TEL AVIV - (JTA) - The
name of the Israeli paratroopers
is taking its position side by side
with the names of the Maccabeans
and Hashmoncans, said Defense
Minister Moshe Dayan at the an-
nual memorial service for the fall-
en paratroopers held at the para-
troopers' memorial on the main
road leading to the south of Israel.
Some 2,000 people, bereaved
families and high-ranking army of-
ficers attended the solemn service
last Friday during which mothers,
sisters and children lovingly pat-
ted the names of their fallen dear
ones inscribed on the memorial
stone. The stone, however, was
too small to contain all names of
those fallen in recent years, and
an additional plaque was placed
'nearby.

On the eve of Yom Kippur,
Prime Minister Golda Meir
broadcast a message of comfort
to the bereaved families in Is-
rael. She said: "On the eve of
the Day of Atonement, more
than on ordinary days, we are
conscious of the memories of
deear ones who gave their lives
in the campaigns for the renais-
sance and the existence of the
state of Israel."
Mrs. Meir declared that every

citizen of Israel who has lost a
son, a daughter, a brother, a sis-
ter, a father or a husband, "feels
daily and without respite the hurt
of the catastrope."
Continuing, she said: "All of us
pay tribute to your fortitude of
spirit and your magnitude of heart
and want to share your grief. We
know that time does not heal this
pain. I am speaking to you today
while the cease fire on the south-
ern front is still in force." Mrs.
Meeir said that on the other fronts,
too, conditions have become eas-
ier. "We are all glad of it," she
said. "We all hope that shooting
will not be resumed."

Damascus thus had the choice
