Israel's Population Almost 3,000,000

JERUSALEM (ZINS)—The _total .population of Israel, according
to the Central Statistical Bureau, is now 2,977,002, of whom 2,542,000
are Jews and 435,000 non-Jews (inclusive of the 70,500 inhabitants
in the old city of Jerusalem.)
In the past 12 months the population grew by 76,000 (2.6 percent)
with the Jewish population increasing by 60,000 (2.4 percent) and
the non-Jewish (3.7) percent). A total of 67 per cent of the Jewish
increment is the result of natural increase by local birth, i.e., 40,000,
and the balance of 25,000 were new imigrants.

`Hussein Will Never Be a Party to Peace Talks'

TEL AVIV (ZINS)—The present
cease fire in Jordan has only mo
mentarily quieted the civil war,
according to Dr. - Rimalt, chairman
of the executive of Israel's Liberal
Party.

In a Tel Aviv address to party
leaders, Dr. Rimalt said that all - in-
dications point to a renewal of the
struggle between Hussein's forces
and the terrorist groups.
Dr. Rimalt, a former member of
Israel's cabinet, is convinced that
the Palestinian Arabs will never
forgive the bloodbath for which
they hold Hussein personally re-
sponsible. Sooner or later the King
will lose his crown.
Certain that Hussein will never
be a party to any peace negotia-
tions, it is, therefore, pointless for
Israel to resume talks based on the
Rogers peace initiative at the pres-
ent time, according, to Dr. Rimalt.

We must -tooth and nail retain
the use of this life's pleasures,
which our years snatch from us
one after another. —Montaigne.

Monte hire

A relative of Moses was Claude,
who was one of the most Jewishly
knowledgable - laymen in Jewish
history. He wrote volumes in Eng-
land to expound the beautiful
teachings of. Judaism.
Well, now there's another Monte-
fiore. His name is High, and, vey
iz mir, he's an Episcopal minister,
very reverend yet, in Cambridge,
England.
. Recently he composed a sermon
called "Does God Really Care?"
It was distributed by the Eposco-
palian Seabury Press.
In the sermon he deals with the
death of Jesus. He writes that it
can't be attributed to the Jews of
today but to some "people who
lived in the first century Pales-
tine."
Who were those people? Well, he
writes, there were the Pharisees,
"jealous of their religious insights,"
and Sadducees who "felt that their
status was being attacked." And
Caiapbas who- "thought that his
death would be expedient."
Were the Romans involved? This
Episcopalian Montefiore does . not
say.
The great Claude Montefiore
wrote thousands of words to prove
that the Pharisees were not at all
what they are depicted to be in the
Nei% Testament; they were peace-
ful and non-hypocritical and were,
indeed, the real authors of many
of the noble sentiments ascribed
to Jesus in the New Testament. He
strove to prove that the trial of
Jesus, in the New Testament ver-
sion, couldn't have taken place,
Jews didn't-have trials during the
Passover 'oeriod.
Most of the Christian world
has now accepted these statements
and is doing. much to teach its
children not to.blame the Jews for
the death of _Jesus or to accept the
harsh picture_Of-,the- yharisees in
the Christian Bible-.
And now along comes a Monte-
fiore—and ignores ill this. Tell me,
with him for a friend, do we need
an enemy?

Ben-GurionAs Planning
Major Educational Center

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Former
Premier David Ben-Gurion, who
celebrated his 84th birthday Sun-
day, wants to create a major edu-
cational_center at his desert home
town of Sdeh Baker in the Negev.
A high school, teachers' semi-
nary and an ulpan for new im-
migrants are already functioning.
Ben-Gurion hopes they will form
the nucleus of a Negev educational
institute sponsored by the govern-
ment. Histadrut and the Jewish
Agency. The establishment of a
joint authority to further the pro-
ject is still a year away.
