Flint Adopts S1,200,000 Goal for UFA
Flint Jewry has adopted a goal of $1,200,000 for the United Jewish
Appeal in the emergency year for Israel's defense, as a response to the
national appeal for a billion-dollar participation by world Jewry in the
philanthropic and investment needs for Israel in 1971.
The Flint Jewish Community Council, at an emergency meeting
of its board of governors, Tuesday evening, acted unanimously in deciding
upon this goal.

Alfred Klein, president of the Flint Jewish Community Council,
pointed out tthat the newly adopted unprecedented goal represents nearly
double the amount Flint Jewry raised last year and added: "Accepting the
responsibility as part of the national obligation for the billion-dollar
philanthropic goal, we must forget all previous standards of giving."
Flint's Jewish leaders are unanimous in their belief that the new
goal, the largest on record, can be attained.

Pelavin Young Leader Award
Dr. William Bernard is recipient
of the 1970 Betty Pelavin Memorial
Young Leadership Award, it was
announced by Alfred Klein, presi-
dent of the Flint Jewish Commu-
nity Council.
Klein stated that some years
ago, the Flint community recog-
nized the need for development of
young people to shoulder the re-
sponsibilities o f
community
needs, "men and
women who
would be respon-
sive to overseas
commit-
ments and who
would fill future
manpower r e -
quirements."

mittee on leadership development
was established by the Pelavin
Foundation, and young men and

mittee and cultural committee. He
is a member of the Board of Tem-
ple Beth El, executive committee
member of Flint Osteopathic Hos-
pital and member of the board of
COLD, Inc. Dr. Bernard has serv-
ed as Bnai Brith ADL chairman.
For the past two years, he has
been co-chairman of the young
leadership division of the Flint
United Jewish Appeal campaign.
Dr. and Mrs. Bernard will attend
the CJFWF general assembly in
Kansas City, and will be honored
at the Flint Council's annual din-
ner Nov. 29 at Cong. Beth Israel.
Parents Urged to Join Their Children
in Protest March for Soviet Jewry

mittee of the Jewish Community
Council has called for support of
the young people who are plann-
ing a march Sunday to protest
treatment of Jews by the Soviet
Union. They will march at 2 p.m.
from McFarlan Park, across from
the Durant Hotel, to City Hall.
Stanzler, president of COLD,
Inc., a local facility for caring for
youngsters on drugs, said that "al-
most all of these addicts have re-
jected their home and society. Part
of our program is to present them
with an environment with which
they can identify. It is a society
you would not believe, but to them
it is at least something to grasp.
"It would have been far easier.
Dr. Stanzler continued, "if they
had been able to have meaningful
experiences with their own parents
and friends — in areas of mutual
interest and. in the case of Jewish
addicts (and there are plenty of
them), if they had been able to
have happy, sincere Jewish in-
volvement with their parents.
"I believe Jewish parents should
join their children in activities as
meaningful as this protest march,"
he concluded.
Beth Israel Launches
Israel Bond Drive
Responding to- the emergency
situation in Israel, Cong. Beth Is-
rael conducted a Bond drive fol-
lowing Kol Nidre services.
After a sermon by Rabbi Hillel
Millgram, Louis Kasle, a supporter
of Israel bonds since the inception
of the state, stressed that Israel's
industrial development was vital
to her survival and these needs
could be met only through the pur-
chase of Israel Bonds.
Kasle announced initial subscrip-
tions of more than $100,000. He
said that this year's drive will be
conducted by Flint Bnai Brith and
will culminate with a dinner Nov.
22 at Beth Israel. Reservations
can be made by contacting Mrs.
Sol Schafer.
