Bessie Halpern, Mother
of Beth Shalom Rabbi

Bessie E. Halpern, mother of
Rabbi Mordecai S. Halpern of
Cong. Beth Shalom and widow of
Rabbi Abraham Halpern, spiritual
leader for 44 years of Cong. Bnai
Amoona, St. Louis, died Sunday
in St. Paul, where she was living
with a daughter.
Mrs. Halpern, 78, bad cofound-
ed with her husband the kosher
kitchen of the Jewish Hospital of
St. Louis and personally saw to
the maintenance of kashrut there.
She was a member of-the Daugh-
_ ters of Israel and Mizrachi, Re-
ligious Zionist Organization, and
on the board of the sisterhood
of Bnai Amoona.
Born in Lithuania, Mrs. Halpern
lived in St. Louis 45 years. When
her husband died in 1962, she
moved to St. Paul.
Surviving besides her son are
two daughters, Mrs. Harry (Fay-
ga) Gordon of Mamaroneck, N.Y.,
and Mrs. Bernard (Laeh) Raskas
of St. Paul, and eight grandchil-
dren.

Abraham Weiss,
Rabbinics Scholar,
Yeshiva Professor

JERUSALEM — Dr. Abraham
Weiss, a rabbinics scholar for 40
years who served on the faculty of
Yeshiva University for 27 years
until retirement in 1967, died Oct.
4 here at age 75.
Since 1967 he was professor of
Talmud at Israel's Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity. Funeral services were
held in Jerusalem. The eulogy was
given by Israel's minister of reli-
gion, Dr. Zerah Warhaftig.
Dr. Weiss had , taught at Yeshiva
University's Bernard Revel Gradu-
ate School since he came to the
United States in 1940.
He was the author of 10 ma-

velopment of the Talmud. While
at Yeshiva University, he edited
