Community to Celebrate Simhat Torah
Sukot will come to its conclusion
with Shemini Atzeret services Wed-
nesday evening and Thursday
morning, followed by the one-day
celebration of Simhat Torah, the
festival of the rejoicing of the
Law, Friday.
(An exception, Temple Kol Ami,
will mark Simhat Torah 7:45 p.m.
Wednesday at the Birmingham
Unitarian Church. Children will
march with flags and apples. Its
Sukot service will be held 7:45
_ p.m. today, when kindergarten and
first grade students will be conse-
crated to their studies.)
- Yizkor memorial prayers tra-
ditionally are recited on the
morning of Shemin( Atzeret.
Simhat Torah this year will be
linked to the festival as it is ob-
served in the Soviet Union, where
a growing number of Jews, de-
prived of their freedom to emi-
grate to Israel, demonstrate in
front. of Moscow's Central Syna-
gogue. _ - -
Cong. Bnal David Rabbi Hayim
Donin will preach on "Soviet
Jewry: the Call From Beyond" at
services Thursday. The schedule
is for 5:20 p.m. Wednesday; 5:30
p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.ra. both
Thursday and Friday.
Cong. Beth Isaac of Trenton's
Shemin' Atzeret-Simhat Torah
services will be held 7 p.m.'Wed-
nesday. Rabbi David Jessel will
speak on "Simhat Torah in Is-
raeL"
Cong. Mishluin Israel Nusach
Hari Lubavitcher Center will host
a Sukot party for all Jewish chil-
dren in the neighborhood. Boys
and girls age 6 to 12 will be en-
tertained by Mr. Gee Bee, a clown
and ventriloquist. Other highlights
of the party include a tour of the
youth center facilities, a survey
of forthcoming outings, events and
clubs, an introduction to the syna-
gogue sutra and a program of
"esrog bentching" with eacb
child saying the prayer over the
Lulav and esrog. A special guest,
Big Gedalia Goomber, will be on
band. Prizes will.be awarded and
refreshments served, all at a nomi-
nal charge. All Jewish youth in
the neighborhood, especially high
school and college students.— are
invited to participate in the Hasi-
dic dancing and singing of Simhat
Torah 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Cong. Bnai Moshe services will
be held 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and
8:30 a.m. Thursday, when Rabbi.
Moses Lehrman will speak on
"Building Up." The hakafot, or
marching with the Scroll of the
Law, will take place 6 p.m:- Thurs-
day and 9 a.m. Friday.
Temple Beth El will hold serv-
ices 10:30 a.m. Thursday, when
Dr. Richard C. Hertz will speak
on "Winding Up the Holiday Sea-
son."
Adas Shalom Synagogue serv-
ices are scheduled for 5:45 p.m.
Wednesday and i a.m. Thursday,
when Rabbi. Jaeob - E. Segal will
