Technion-MIT Profs Devise Desalination Method HAIFA—A major improvement in the process of sea-water desali- nation has been developed jointly by a scientist from the Massachu- setts Institute of Technology and a scientist from Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. The two are Prof. Ronald F. Probstein of MIT's mechanical engineering department, and Dr. Josef Shwartz of the Technion's aeronautical engineering depart- ment. They have developed a new sep- arator—a device with a key role in desalination methods using the freezing process. Its- function is to separate and wash the pure-water crystals that are formed in sea water during the freezing stage. The separation is a critical step in the process. The new device is from 10 to 100 times faster and more efficient than any type previously used in de- salination plants. The- increase in efficiency will contribute sub- stantially to reduction in costs. Cost considerations are crucial for desalination efforts, since the conversion of sea water must be economically feasible before it can be -undertaken on a wide scale. The AVCO Corporation in the United States has recently ac- quired the rights for the produc- tion of the separator on an indus- trial scale, and the AVCO Systems Division of Wilmington, Mass., has undertaken a program aimed at the production of water desalina- tion and purification plants utiliz- ing the new separator. Prof. Probstein, in the U.S., and Dr. Shwartz, in Israel, plan to continue their joint efforts to make further improvements in crystalli- zation and related processes of water desalination. The develop- ment and construction of a labora- tory-scale model of the separator were done at MIT, where Dr. Shwartz was studying in 1967-68 under Prof. Probstein on a fellow- Prof: Probstein serves as an ad- ship from the American TeChnion Society. visor to the Technion and, in addi- Dr. Shwartz is presently a senior tion to his desalination work, is lecturer at Technion, where he also internationally recognized as a studied as an undergraduate. Israel No Longer the Monopoly of,the Zionist Movement — Goldstein NEW YORK (JTA) — The ex- pansion of the Jewish Agency to include 50 per cent representation by non-Zionists represents "a great challenge to Zionists to work for aliya as an ideology, not merely as a philanthropy." Zionism needs "more than ever before to demonstrate its rationale, its reason for existence." Dr. Israel Goldstein, a Zionist member of the Jewish Agency and world chairman of the Keren Hayesod United Israel Appeal, made those observations in an exclusive interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in his study at Cong. Bnai Jeshurun, of which he is rabbi emeritus. "Is - rael is no longer the monopoly of the Zionist movement," Dr. Gold- stein said. "The expansion of the Jewish Agency puts the Zionist on the spot more than ever before to justify his existence as a Zionist." Dr. Goldstein, who was here to preach at his congregation's High Holy Day services, noted that the Zionist half of the agency will be responsible for aliya "propagan- da," Zionist education and the "counteracting" of New Left in- roads among the youth. The non- Zionist half will be responsible for the health and welfare of Israeli immigrants. The reorganization was agreed upon in August, and took effect then. A similar 50.50 plan was launched In 1929, but, in the words of Dr. Goldstein, "it petered out after live years." Dr. Goldstein accorded Dr. Louis A. Pincus, chairman of the Jewish Agency Executive, most of the credit for the evolution of the new plan. - The chairmanship and treas- urership of the reorganized Jew- ish Agency are reserved for the soon.to-be-elected chairman and treasurer of the Zionist faction. Dr. Goldstein said it was likely that the non-Zionist group would be headed by Max M. Fisher, the Detroit-based inchistrialist, Jewish leader and presidential confidant. Dr. Goldstein emphasized that the Jewish Agency would continue to forego positions on Middle East and other political and military issues. Under the new alignment, 30 per cent of the Zionist half of the administration will be allotted to Americans, and 20 per cent to the rest of the world, based on the size of each country's Jewish community.
