Red Cross Probes Alleged Torture of Israeli

GENEVA (JTA) — Reacting to
charges of murder by Israel, the
International Committee of the Red
Cross said here Tuesday that it
was asking the Egyptian govern.
ment to Investigate the circum-
stances surrounding the death of
an Israeli fighter pilot Moshe Gold-
wasser, who was captured after
balling out safely over Egyptian
territory when his jet was shot
down Aug. 3.
Israel Monday made public a
complaint filed with the Red Cross
in which it accused Egyptian per-
sonnel of having committed in-
humane acts and acts of torture
on Lt. Goldwasser, causing his
death. Israel demanded that Egypt
place the responsible parties on
trial.
An IRC spokesman said the or-
ganization was asking the Egyp-
tians for precise information on
the treatment of Lt. Goldwasser
before and after his death. "When
we have received the results of
the inquiry we will decide whether
that is sufficient and will also for-
ward the information to Israel,"
the spokesman said. Israel based
its charges on the findings of a
postmortem performed by the
army's chief medical officer on
Sept. 2.
Egypt reported Goldwasser's
death on Aug. 4 and gave the

Arab, Jewish Women
Gather in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM — The hope for
peace and strengthening of bonds
of friendship was expressed n a
unique meeting between Arab and
Jewish women which took place
here recently through the auspices
of the Pioneer Womere-Moetzet Ha-
poalot.
At the initiative of Arab women
from East Jerusalem attending
Pioneer Women's vocational train-
ing courses, 200 women leaders
from all parts of the country —
Jewish, Christian, Moslem, Druze
—gathered in Jerusalem for a
fraternal get-together.
They visited Mrs. Rachel Sha-
zar, the president's wife at Belt
HaNassi, where speakers express-
ed the hope for permanent peace
and close friendship between the
women and their communities.

cause as cardiac arrest follow-
ing a nervous breakdown. Israel
requested the IRC to demand
that Egyptian authorities find and
bring to trial the persons who
ordered or committed inhuman
acts against Lt. Goldwasser in
violation of the Geneva Conven-
tion on the treatment of prisoners
of war.

Israel has also demanded that
Egypt take immediate action to
prevent further breaches of the
Geneva Convention.
According to the Israeli com-
plaint, Goldwasser's body was ex-
amined by an Egyptian doctor,
Mohammed Fouad Anwar, on Aug.
17, 13 days after his death was
announced. The remains were sub-
sequently transferred to Israel
where another postmortem was
performer on Sept. 2 by Col. Reu-
ben Elder, the Israel Army's Chief
medical officer.
According to Dr. Elder, the re-
mains were in an advanced stage
of decay, indicating that the corps
was not kept under refrigeration
as is the normal practice. The im-
plication was that the Egyptians
hoped that evidence of torture
would be obliterated by the time
the Israelis received the body.

According to Dr. Elar's post-
mortem report, sufficient evidence
remained to indicate that Lt.
Goldwasser had undergone severe
torture including blows with blunt
instruments, electric shock and
mutilation while still alive.

The Egyptian doctors removed
some of his internal organs after
death for no apparent medical
reasons, the Israeli complaint
stated. That in itself, according
to the Israelis, indicated an attempt
to remove evidence of maltreat-
ment.
The Israeli report noted that Lt.
Goldwasser had undergone his an-
nual medical checkup and was
found in excellent condition six
weeks. before his plane was down-
ed, only four days before the
Suez cease fire went into effect.
