Irgun Study Shows Myth of Solidarity in Underground
Author Indicts

Exploding the myth of solidarity
existing in the Palestinian under.
ground of the late 19305 between
the Irgun and the Revisionists,
Rabbi Daniel Levine, of Halifax,
N.S., In the first comprehensive
study in English of the subject,
has found an aloofness and even
lack of trust in relations between
the two groups.
The study, presented as a doe-
lora/ thesis at Yeshiva University,
covers a period of 20 years from
the forming of self-defense Jewish
units in 1920, to the death of David

Raziel, commander-in-chief of the
Irgun, in 1941.
Rabbi Levine received a doe-
tor of Hebrew literature from
Bernard Revel Graduate School at
the university's 38th annual corn
mencement exercises, Thursday.

EXACTLY RIGHT FOR THE OCCASION

By ABRAHAM HESCHEL
"The Sabbath"

The Bible is more concerned
with time than with space. It sees
the world in the dimension of time.
It pays more attention to genera-
tions, to events, than to countries,
to things; it is more concerned
with history than with geography.
To understand the teaching of the
Bible, one must accept its premise
that time has a meaning which is
at least equal to that of space;
that time has a significance and
sovereignity of its own . . .
One of the most distinguished
words in the Bible is the word
kadosh, holy; a word which more
than any other is representative of
the mystery and majesty of the
divine. Now what was the first
holy object in the history of the
world? Was it a mountain? Was it
an altar?
It is, indeed, a unique occasion
at which •the distinguished word
kadosh is used for the first time:
in the Book of Genesis at the end
of the story of creation. How ex-
tremely significant is the fact that
it is applied to time: "And God
blessed the seventh day and made
It holy" (Gen. 2:3). There is no
reference in the record of creation
to any object in space that would
be endowed with the quality of
holiness.
This is a radical departure from
accustomed religious thinking. The
mythical mind would expect that,
after heaven and earth have been
established, God would create a
holy place—a holy mountain or a
holy spring—whereupon a sanctu-
ary is to be established. Yet it
seems as if_to the Bible it is boll
ness in time, the Sabbath, which
comes first .. .
The meaning of the Sabbath is
to celebrate time rather than
under the tyranny of things of
space; on the Sabbath we try to
space; on the Sabbath we try to
become attuned to holiness in
time. It is a day on which we are
called upon to share in what is
eternal in time, to tuost from the
results of Creation to the mystery
of creation; from the world of
creation to the creation of the
world.

Holiness in Time

Society's Failure
to End Poverty

James Graham is an activist
lawyer who has worked among the
poverty stricken, who has labored
for reform in present practices and
whose deep study of existing con-
ditions leads him to indict church-
es, the legal profession, unions.
His analyses, the results of his
life's labors and his thorough
studies are incorporated in "The
Enemies of the Poor," published
by Random House.
He had hoped for progress In
1969, but he is unhappy, and he
states: "The appearance of prog-
ress or piecemeal advances in a
period of our history that calls for
huge chunks may be worse than
no progress at all."
Referring to the teachers'
strikes and troubles in 1866 he
contends: "Anti-Semitic utter-
ances by a few individuals were
disseminated in UFT literature
to inflame the minds of middle-
class Jews across the city." And
in reference to the school strike
and the hope of blacks and Span-
ish parents "for advancement in
the white society," he points out:
"The white minority that chose
to join them—parents and ideal-
istic young teachers, .many of
them Jews, who crossed the UFT
- picket lines—could say for the
first time they had gotten to
know and like black people."
Powerful as an indictment for
failure to act in ending poverty,
the Graham volume serves as an
instrument to enlighten the liber-
tarian forces to increase their ef-
forts li• the struggle for. justice for
the elovnitrodden and the impov-
erished. _ —P.S.

try connected to the line.
The first of its kind to extend
into the Mediterranean, the cable
was inaugurated in April.
Israel Posts has acquired eight
telephone and two telex lines on
the new cable, bringing the total
number of direct lines to the -U.S.
to 20, plus 12 satellite lines.
The new hookup Is expected to
satisfy "Israel's international tele-
phone requirements until 1972. By
then, a local satellite ground sta-
tion, now in the planning stage,

is expected to be in operation.

during the Arab onslaught in 1920.
"The consensus seems to be,"
Rabbi Levine said, "that the Irgun
was a military wing of the Zionist
Revisionist organization in the
same manner as the Hagana was
a military wing of the yishnv
(settlement). Jabotinsky has also
been designated as the spiritual
father and nominal head of the
Irgun."
According to Rabbi Levine,
these views are totally incorrect.
"The Irgun was completely in-
dependent of any political party,
including the Revisionists. Further-
more, there was a greater stress
on capitalism among Irgun mem-
bers than with the Revisionists.
As for cooperation with the Re-
visionists, there was more of a
spirit of aloofness and lack of trust
on the part of the Irgun. Its mem-
bers thought Jabotinsky a naive
individual, out of touch with real-
ity, directing operations from the
outside after the British expelled
him from Palestine in the 1920s,"
he said.
