Jet Engine Factory in Beth Shemesh

Canadian Jewry Tackles Minority Problem

By MICHAEL SOLOMON

(Copyright 1970, JTA, Inc.)

Canadian Jewry had been most
fortunate to have forged such
a highly efficient and finely-
tuned political instrument as
the Canadian Jewish Congress.
Reaching the crest of half a cen-
tury in the service of Canadian
Jewry, the Congress emerges force-
ful without becoming cumbersome,
centralized yet flexible, respectful
of established traditions but pow-
erful enough to listen to the young
ebullient elements with their revo-
lutionary twist. In this respect, the
300.000 Canadian Jews are more
privileged than their 6,000,000
brothers in the South.

A general view of one of the halls in the Beth Shemesh jet engine
plant.
There have been persistent re-

ports in aviation journals that Is-
rael is shortly to come out with a
fighter plane of its own device and
manufacture, which may be de-
scribed as a sort of Super Mirage.
Their reports have been neither
confirmed nor denied by respon-
sible Israel quarters. But the jet
engine factory which was opened
at Beth Shemesh, near Jerusalem,
just over three years ago, in col-
laboration with an eminent French
Jewish jet engine manufacturer, is
making rapid strides. In the course
of the few years that the plant
has been in operation. large num-
bers of workers, for the most part
new immigrants to the country,
have received training in the han-
dling of the intricate machinery
and the plant is well on the way
to turning out the first all-Israel
jet airplane engine.

As Samuel Bronfman, CC (Com-
panion of Canada), honorary presi-
dent of the Congress and the Nestor
of Jewish public life in this coun-
try for more than four decades,
said at the opening of the Cana-

dian Jewish Congress Museum and of the component ethnic groups.

gress to its world wide position

discrimination in employment
and accommodation, better edu-
cation for Jewish children, Fed-
eral and Provincial Bill of Rights
guaranteeing the right of the in-
dividual, "in short, all it can to
make a worthwhile democracy."
The anti-hate bill had been
shuttled from one commission to
another, from one parliamentary
session to another. It became the
on-again, off-again project of the
present Liberal government. De-
spite the fact that the present
prime minister of Canada, Pierre
Elliott Trudeau, had collaborated in
the embodiment of the anti-hate
idea in his former capacity of a
professor of law at the Universite
de Montreal, the bill encountered
the opposition not only of the con-
servatives but also a vociferous
minority in Trudeau's own party.
Many of these so-called advo-
cates of "the freedom of speech"
and jealous defenders of the es-
sential liberties by opposing the

ish population–demonstrated the
Jewish oneness. Not only that
Jews renounced their picnics and
golf games and exercised their
electoral rights but they voted
almost unanimously for the Lib-
eral candidates, re-electing Dr.
Victor Goldbloom, a Montreal
podiatrist, and Harry Blank, a
Montreal lawyer', with over-
whelming majorities.

With the Bourassa Liberals in
saddle for the next four years, the
Jews are breathing easier. But no
one forgets that every year some
80,000 new people get the right to
vote and that the immense ma-
jority of the students, like their
professors, clergy and intellec-
tuals are pro-separatists. They
cannot forget also that "Anglo-
Saxon Jews" is an expression coin-
ed by the separatists and that in
their first show of force the separa-
tists had collected not less than 24
per cent of the general vote cast.
It is true that Renee Levesque was
defeated and so were his other lieu-
tenants, but the force of their agi-
tation has not yet been wholly
spent. It can be reactivated if the

Whether anti-Semitism will sur-

But, anyone who for political rea-
sons or otherwise would indulge
in this game in the future will have
to think twice; the punishment for

utterance from the balcony of the
Montreal City Hall, "Vive le Que-
bec libre," the French fact or bet-
ter, said, the force behind French-
Canadian nationalism demanding a
separate state for Quebec, had
kept Canadian Jews thinking. A
free Quebec means not only the
non-entity of Canada as a political
body but also a threat to a free
society, with serious implications
for freedom-loving Jews.
Therefore, in the last April pro-
vincial elections, when for the first
time in history a separatist party—
Le Party Quebecois—solicited the
votes of the French-Canadians, the
election was followed by all Jews
but especially by the 125,000 liv-
ing in Quebec, with a sentiment of
deep apprehension. Every. Jew

bill were in fact unveiling their
well-known anti-Jewish feelings.
Moreover, some of them pointed an
accusing finger at the Canadian
Jewish Congress as the initiator
and to the Canadian Jews as the
sole beneficiaries of this "anti-
democratic" legislation.
The stance taken by the Cana-
dian Jewish Congress leaders was
that invitation to genocide and
appeal to violence and vile hatred
represent a threat not only against
the Jews but against any ethnic
group living in Canada, and that
there was no guarantee that once
one of the minorities were at-
tacked, others would be exempted.
With ability and persuasion, re-
futing the argumentation of the
anti-Semites that the bill is a "Jew-
ish law," the Canadian Jewish Con-
gress succeeded in demonstrating
that incitement to genocide like
the cult of violence and hatred are
as bad for Canada as for any one
