Jordan and guerrilla chief Yassir
Arafat together in Cairo to sign a
pact ending the bloodshed.
Without Nasser's support, Hus-
sein's position appeared more pre-
carious than ever. Some observers
here thought the guerrillas would
seize the vacuum in Egypt as an
opportunity to destroy what re-
mains of U.S. Secretary of State
William P. Rogers' Mid East peace
initiative.
American Jewish leaders added
their comments Monday to the
flood of statements on Nasser's
death. Philip E. Hoffman, presi-
dent of the American Jewish Corn-
mittee, said "We regret all per-
sonal tragedies of course. We hope,
though, that the international tur-
moil that inevitably will result
from President Nasser's death will
not be allowed to stand in the way
of the Middle East peace we all
pray for."
Dr. William Wexler, president of
Bnai Frith, said, "We earnestly
hope that President Nasser's suc-
cessor will initiate policies that
will demonftrate an attitude of
genuine friendship between Egypt
and the United States and show
greater concern for achieving a
just and secure peace in the Mid-
dle East to serve his countrymen
and all people of that area."
-
well by their Palestinian captors
who shared food and water with
them and were very polite. Al-
though most of the hostages were
Jewish and some had dual Amer-
ican Israeli citizenship, there was
no discrimination. Kosher food was
provided for the observant Jews
among the hostages and they were
permitted to observe the Sabbath.
David Silver, 18, a Jewish youth
from Brooklyn, told newsmen, "I
made friends with them. I became
a little more sympathetic toward
their cause. They are human be-
ings, like everyone else." Barbara
Menscb, a 16-year-old high school
girl from Scarsdale, N.J., said
"They really had no intention of
harming us. We had some very
close calls. It was extremely fright-
ening." However, another Jewish
youth, who did not want to be
identified, commented, "I suppose
we're saying just what they wanted
us to say—what great guys they
are and how they've got a real
point. As someone said, we're
worth more alive to them than
dead."
Mark Shain, a 20-year-old Uni-
versity of Wisconsin student, said
"We felt they knew if anything
happened to us it would be the end
of them as far as world opinion
is concerned" He said he thought
the guerrillas finally released the
hostages because "we were a lia-
bility" to them.

Social Necessity
A free press is not a privilege
but an organic necessity in a great
society. Without criticism and re-
liable and intelligent reporting,
the government cannot govern.
For there is no adequate way in
which it can keep itself informed
about what the people of the coun-
try are thinking and doing and
wanting.—Walter Lippmann.
