ADL's Study of Social Science Text Books Reveals
Little Improvement in the Treatment of Minorities

Inaccuracy, omission and half-
truths still mark the treatment of
American minorities in social stu-
dies textbooks, according to a
study published as a book by the
Anti-Defamation League of Bnai
Brith. -
"Minorities In-Textbooks" (Quad-
rangle Paperbacks), examines 45
of the _nation's most widely used
junior and senior high school social
studies texts and fails to find a
single one which presents "a rea-
sonably complete and undistorted
picture" of American Negroes,
Jews and other minorities.
The ADL, which conducted a
similar study in 1960, further re-
veals that despite past criticism of

publishers and authors, "a signific-
ant number of texts published to-
day continue to present a principal-
ly white, Protestant, Anglo-Saxon
view of America past and present
with the nature and problems of
minority groups going largely neg-
lected."
The study was conducted for
the ADL by Michael B. Kane,
under the supervision of Oscar
Cohen, who wrote the preface to
the book and is director of the
agency's program division.
Kane, comparing the current
textbook treatment of minorities
to how they were treated 10 years
ago found "some genuine but un-
even improvement."
His book points out, among other
examples:
Treatment of the Jews is still
largely confined to an over-
emphasis on their ancient past.
Only a very few texts present a
varied true-to-life picture of mod-
em Jews and their contributions
to America.
Nazi persecution of Jews and
other minorities is still inadequate-
ly treated or completely ignored.
While a few backs give a real-
istic and constructive portrayal
of certain minority groups, no
one book gives an adequate
over-all presentation.
The ADL's 1960 study labeled
textbook discussion of Jews as
"distressingly inadequate." The
current work finds that "neither

the quality nor quantity of refer-
ences to American Jews has im-
proved significantly" since that
time. It is pointed out that world
history texts still give considerably
more attention to the ancient He-
brews than to later Jewish history.
In addition:
• Textbook accounts of the
crucifixion continue to be too super-
ficial to dispel misconceptions coo-
cerning the role played by Jews.
Some texts avoid mentioning the
crucifixion altogether while a few
still explicitly link the Jews to the
death of Jesus in a way likely to
increase anti-Semitic feelings.
• The infrequent and disjointed
references to Jews in medieval and
modern European history still deal
mainly with persecution. However,
most texts do offer comprehensive
discussions of the state of Israel
which acknowledge and highlight
the accomplishments of its Jewish
citizens.
• Although previously nega-
tive portrayals of the Jews as a
group are gene from American
history and social problems
texts, they are not replaced by
positive references. Only a very
few texts convey a realistic
sense of the diversity of the
American Jewish population and
of their similarity to the ether
Peoples of this nation.
• Textbook passages which
make an effort to explain why
Jews should not be referred to as
a race are on the increase.
The study finds that while one
of the 48 texts examined in 1960
gave "fully adequate coverage" of
the Nazi persecutions, the current
figure is four out of 45. In 1960,
nine offered "reasonably adequate
coverage;" now 11 do.
In 1960, 17 omitted the topic en-
tirely, today the figure is 13. Whsle
some improvement is shown in
these areas, the percentage of
texts which slight or minimize the
topic is about the same-45.9 per
cent in 1960 to 46.7 per cent today.
