On Biblical Zoo's 30th Anniversary

THE DETROIT MISR ItWS

of Israel's First Male Sabra Chimp

JERUSALEM—A male chimpan-
zee, believed to be the first born
in Israel since the days of King
Solomon, recently became the new-
est baby attraction in Jerusalem's
Biblical Zoological Gardens.
Reporting the event, Prof. Aharon
Shulov, professor of zoology at the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem
and founder and director of the
Biblical Zoo, said the birth almost
coincided with the 30th anniver-
sary of the zoo, founded Sept. 17,
1940. Celebrations marking the
anniversary will be held at the
forthcoming Sukkoth holiday.
The zoo is in its fourth home in
Jerusalem, in the suburb of Ro-
mema. It was founded at the
Seligsberg Vocational School dose
to Zion Square, then moved to
Prophet Samuel Street near the
former Mandelbaum Gate and
subsequently to the Hebrew Uni-
versity's Mount Scopus campus
where it existed until 20 years ago.
Originally, that zoo had 100 ani-
mals, but there were only. 18 in a
convoy brought to West Jerusalem
by the United Nations when its con-
tinued existence on Mount Scopus
became impossible. Today, the 22-
acre zoo boasts 700 animals, all
mentioned in the Bible, including
ostrich, leopard, lion and bear.
The new chimpanzee, called
Dalet (fourth letter in the He-
brew alphabet), is the son of
12-year-old Emma, who came to
Israel from the United States
eight years ago, together with
her husky husband, 12-year-old
Charlie, the two named after
Charles Darwin and his wife.
For several years, the chimpan-
zees lived in happy, though child-
less matrimony in Jerusalem.

Charlie's second spouse, 9-year-old
Mrs. Jackie, also from the United
States, is the mother of a baby
girl named Olga.

Zoo include:

noted scholars will attend, includ-
ing Premier Golds Meir and
