Rabbi Gorrelick Will Be Honored Prior to Year's Sabbatical Rabbi Benjamin H. Gorrellck will be honored at a community- wide testimonial dinner Oct. 18 in the Jewish Center, it was an- nounced by Sidney . Silverman, president of Cong. Beth Achim, which is sponsoring the tribute. Rabbi Gorrelick will be honored for his nearly 40 years in the rabbinate and his 21 years of service to Detroit Jewry. The rabbi will leave op a year's sabbatical, to be spent largely in Israel, and then will assume the title of rabbi emeritus of Beth Achim. The affair will be on behalf of Israel Bonds, in which Rabbi Gorrelick has played a promi- nent role since the initiation of the campaign In 1951. Born in Lithuania, the rabbi studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva. He came to New York in 1921, and his father was the head teacher in the first Jewish day school in America, the Rabbi Jacob Joseph School. Rabbi Gorrelick received a BA degree in social science and English literature from the City College of New York and did post- graduate work in sociology at Har- vard. He is a graduate of the Teacher's Institute and was or- dained rabbi by the Jewish Theo- logical Seminary of America, magna cum laude. Rabbi Gorrelick has served con- gregations in Boston and in Al- bany, N.Y. He served as chaplain of the U.S. Army in the European theater in World War II and en- gaged in rescue and rehabilitation work, aiding hundreds of. Jewish orphans to settle in IsraeL Rabbi Gorrelick came to Detroit in 1949 and was director of educa- tion at Shaarey Zedek in 1949-50. He is the author of a chap- ter in the book, "Rabbis in Uni- form," dealing with the Jewish chaplains in World War IL The rabbi is the author of a number of cantatas, which have been produced 'a synagogues here and elsewhere.
