Beth Isaac of Trenton to Install Rabbi Jessel as Its Spiritual Leader Ann Arbor Temple to Meet Black Groups After Sit-In By HANNAH MORRISON University of Michigan Members of two welfare organi- zations left the premises of Cong. Beth Israel in Ann Arbor last Sat- urday night, following a three-day sit-in. The groups, Black Economic De- velopment League and the Wash- tenaw County Welfare Rights Or- ganization, had demanded $50,000 for the benefit of their respective constituences. Though they had not received any pledges from Beth El Presi- dent Prof. Henry Gershowitz, the congregation recognized the or- ganization as legitimate and promised an open meeting this Sunday regarding their demands. "We're more than willing to co- operate in the needs of the poor," said Prof. Gershowitz, "but can- not tolerate illegal threats and oc- cupation. The board and I have been pressured to set up a meeting earlier than we might have other- wise." state- The board included ment a promise to discontinue its efforts to obtain a restraining or- der barring members of BEDL and .WRO from the congregation's prop- erty. Prior to the temporary agree- ment, the congregation and group representatives were in what Prof. Gershowitz -termed a "no-talking stage." During an unofficial conversa- tion Saturday night, it was discov- ered that Henry Bryant UI, a BEDL member, was willing to compromise. Bryant said, "After all the emotional hysteria, they're willing to deal with us." He predicted that BEDL and WRO would be able to "lay our rap down at the Sept. 20 meeting." Prof. Gershowitz said, "The synagogue is no in the position financially or legally to spend a penny. We have no institutional money. However we are giving them the chance to address in- dividuals to raise money." Both Bryant and Catherine Emer- son, a representative of WRO, said they realized they bad overesti- mated the temple's resources, when they had demanded $50,000. "We're willing to accept fund raising," said Mrs. Emerson, calling the situation "satisfactory." The two groups have previously staged sit-ins at the Ann Arbor Unitarian Church, which pledged $10,000; the First Unitarian Church, which donated $5,000; and the Christian Science congregation. The Ann Arbor Society of Friends has offered its facilities for a day care center and $1,500.
