Ovadyahu's Bialik Speaks' Notes the Famous Poet's Important Sayings

Many of Hayirn Nahman Bialik's
poems have been published in En-
glish translations. Maurice Samuel
and other skilled writers have ren-
dered into English the works of the
great poet.
Herzl Press has just issued a
volume of the sayings of the emi-
nent poet. In "Bialik Speaks" we
have a collection of the views of
Bialik by Mordecai Ovadyahu, in
an English translation by A. El-
Dror, with a commendatory intro-

The variety of topics is es-
pecially impressive in this vol-
ume. The compiler of these say-
ings not only drew upon Bialik's
devotion to the national renais-
sance of Israel but also upon the
literary comments, on the poet's
knowledge of the Bible and the
Talmud from both of which he
had drawn inspiration.
Many of the comments by Bialik
are about personalities of his time,

LISTENING

By HY LEWIS
Guest Columnist

Sam and Sylvia Goldstein, one
of the nicest couples you would
ever want to meet, just back from
Las Vegas . . . Sammy says,
"There's no truth to the rumor
that gambling is down . . . they
are still spending millions on
games of chance . . . including
marriage."
Sam Evans along with Benny
Schecter who are doing the decor
for Danny Raskin's big party were
playing the back nine at Rackham
when Ben's tee shot rolled into
the cup for a hole-in-one. Sammy
looked stunned for a moment . .
approached the tee . . . set his
ball down and said, "O.K., you
had your practice swing, now I'll
have mine."
What had started out to be an
intimate dinner party honoring
Danny Raskin, has now mush-
roomed into a big-bash testimonial
dinner-dance . . . as the list of
:hose wanting to attend grew, more
friends of Danny got together to
expand on the original ides and
that's how it got started. Danny's
list of credits are many . . . as a
zolumnist for The Jewish News
for 28 years . . . his mother Min-
nie's scrap-book of the Listening
Post column goes back to the first
article dated March 27, 1942.
Danny is on the board of directors
of the Jewish National Fund and
the Oak Park Symphony Orches-
tra . . . Honorary member of
numerous charitable organizations,
national representative of Saints
and Sinners who help mentally
retarded children. Unprecedented
3-time chancellor commander of
the Knights of Pythias, Detroit
Lodge No. 55, 32nd degree Mason,
Perfection Lodge . . a Moslem
Shriner. Danny has received cita-
tions from the Jewish War Vet-
erans and the American Legion,
Julius Rosenwald Post for his dedi-
cated services to these august
bodies . . we could go on and
on . . . but come to the dinner-
dance in his honor at the Raleigh
House, Tuesday night, Oct. 16 at
6:30 p.m. and shake hands with
this really nice guy whose host of
friends think that much of him.
Nadine Miller whose twin sons
Brian and Robert are celebrating
their Bar Mitzva this month, ob-
serves that a mother's role is to
deliver children first at the hos-
pital and then by station-wagon
afterwards.
Many people have an aquarium
in their home and it's almost hyp-
notic to watch the little fish move
about so gracefully . . . but if you
were to visit Oak Parkers, Lenore
and Sam Diskin who along with
their boys, Mark, Johnny and Jef-
frey, share their home with over
700 fish in many varieties in as-
sorted aquariums. You can he
entertained for hours watching
this spectacle and come to think
of it . . . no mercury in the water.
Dr. Paul Kerwin observes that
when you're driving it's always
your wife who is the first to see
a parking space, but only after
you passed it . . . which reminds
me that a woman driver can sel-
dom figure out which of the three
parking meters to put her nickel
in.
Johnathon Block, former De-
troiter who has become a citizen
of Israel, writes his 'Uncle Charlie
and Grandfather Abram Hoptmaa
how happy he is in the Holy Land.
He has just become the head
chicken man of his kibutz . . .
Grandpa 'shepped nahas' from
John.
