Here for the Koenig funeral were former minister Menahem Begin and Shimon Peres, minister of transport. He convened 30,000 Christians in a demonstration for Israel three days before the Six-Day War and condemned the Gaullist position. Gen. Koenig headed a long list of prominent French politicians and military men who opposed President deGaulle's arms em- bargo against Israel and fought to have it rescinded. During the 1969 election cam- paign he sought promises to lift the embargo from the two can- didates, Georges Pompidou and Alain Poher. Until shortly before his death, he was a familiar figure at public rallies in support of Israel's right to exist.
