Israeli Shipping to Double by 1973
NEW YORK — The Israeli mer-
chant marine is planning to almost
double its capacity by 1975.
The plan is to expand the ship- -
ping industry front the 1909 totals
of 2.000,000 tons of vessels and
0.800,000 tons of freight volume to
an estimated 4.500.000 tons of ves-
sels and 10,000,000 tons of freight
volume.
With the unprofitable passen-
ger business abandoned, the in-
dustry is concentrating on new
types of ships geared to com-
mercial requirements.
One factor in the expansion is
'Lint Navigation Co.'s planned ad-
dition in 1973 of eight new vessels
out of a total 33 which will cost
$300.000.000. Four will be multi-
purpose freighters that can handle
giant containers. The other four
will he roll-on. roll-off vessels
accommodating truck-trailers or
containers.
To handle the new ships. the Is-
raeli Port Authority is planning,
improvements at the three main
ports of Haifa and a shdod on the
Mediterranean and Eilat on the
Gulf of Aqaba.
