Russian Holiday Greeting Offered to Senders of Cards to Soviet Jews Mina= lona mina*: C HOBbIM r0,40111 ewes CILIA mem, CCCP OT mu Bac ne 3a6bunt H HE 3A1SY,LIEM A copy of the holiday greeting in Russian to be enclosed in cards to Soviet Synagogues. • • • A Rosh Hashana greeting writ- ten in Russian is available from the Jewish Community Council for individuals and groups who would like to send New Year's cards to Jews in the Soviet Union. Translated, the greeting reads: L'Shana Tova Tikatevu! Happy New Year! From the Jews of the U.S.A. To the Jews of the USSR We have not forgotten you. And we will not forget you! The greeting can be inserted in a New Year's card and mailed 19 individuals or synagogues in the Soviet Union. The Community Council also offers an up-to-date listing containing the addresses of Soviet synagogues (below). It was recommended, however, that cards be sent only to those individuals in the Soviet Union who are personally known to the sender. In announcing the availability of the New Year's message, Morris Lieberman, chairman of Council's committee on international con- cerns, and Bernard Panush, chair- man of the subcommittee on Soviet Jewry, stated that the news of increased Russian repression and intimidation of Soviet Jews who have expressed a desire to emi- grate to Israel has prompted a desire by American Jews to extend a personal message of solidarity to the Jews of the Soviet Union. Postage rates to the Soviet Union are: Air mail - 25 cents per half ounce; surface mail-13 cents for the first ounce and 8 cents per additional ounce. Air mail takes 4-5 days to reach its destination; surface mail about one month. In addition to the caution against sending cards to individuals un- known to the sender, Lieberman and Panush also recommended that messages should not be polit- ical or anti-Soviet. Particularly desirable are cards which portray themes of Jewish culture and edu- cation-items unavailable to Jews in the Soviet Union. Copies of the New Year's greet- ing in any quantity can be ob- tained by calling the Community Council, 962-1880.
