The Western Wall

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1970, JTA, Inc.)

There seems to be a question
among some authorities as to

whether the Western Wall as we
know it today was the Western

Wall surrounding the Temple
Mount in Jerusalem or the West-
ern Wall of the Courtyard of the
Temple. Most agree today that it
is the Western Wall of the Temple
Mount. Since it is the only wall
which seems to be left after the
destruction of the original Temple,
it has great significance. This
area is the holiest area in the
world for the Jewish people.
Why is it called the Wailing
Wall?
Two reasons stand out for this
appellation. At night the stones
are covered with dew and an old
tradition claims that this dew
represents the tears that the wall
itself sheds while weeping over the
people in Israel who are in exile.
Some say these tears are now
tears of joy since Israel again
lives in Jerusalem. Another reason
for calling it the Wailing Wall is
that for centuries since the de-
struction of the Temple the Jew-
ish people came to this wall to
wail and bemoan the loss of the
Temple. In accordance with this
tradition, since the Temple has
not yet been rebuilt, the wall could
still be a Wailing Wall.
Tradition has it that King David
himself prepared this wall as a
foundation according to II Chron-
icles 12:22-29. Some claim this is
the reason this wall was never
destroyed. They base it on the
statement from the Talmud
(Sota 9) which stated that Moses'
and David's works were never
destroyed by their enemies. -
