Federal Reserve's Arthur F. Burns
Relates Strong Feeling for Israel
By TRUDE B. FELDMAN
WASHINGTON — A r t h u r F .
Burns, chairman of the board of
governors of the Federal Reserve
System, recently returned from a
four-day visit to Israel where
honorary degrees were conferred
simultaneously upon him and
Prime Minister Golda Meir.
Dr. Burns had received 18 hon-
orary degrees previously, but this
one he deemed "an exceptional
honor."
The degrees were awarded by
the Hebrew University of Jeru-
salem at a festive convocation at
the Rothberg Amphitheater on the
Mt. Scopus campus. Dr. Burns was
cited for his distinguished career
as a scientist; as a leader of econ-
omic research; and for his role in
United States economic policy.

"Although Arthur has received
many other degrees, it was a
special thrill for me to see him
receive this one together with
Golda Meir at the Hebrew Uni-

sharing the experience with that
warm audience. It was a delight-
ful ceremony and very exciting."
Mrs. Burns had admired a paint-
ing by artist Reuben Rubin which
hung on the wall of Golda Meir's
living room. The prime minister
gave her an illustrated autobio-
graphy by the artist as a memento
of her visit to Israel.
She related that Dr. Burns in-
spired the students at Hebrew
University with his expression of
confidence in their ability to create
a lasting prosperity by recognizing
the fundamental importance of
the human element.
In . turn, both Dr. and Mrs. Burns
said they had come home inspired

abled them to achieve a stable
and prosperous economic demo-
cracy in the face of continuous
adversity.
