Bob Nathan's Fantastic 4 Nlia' Robert Nathan, master of the fantasy stories that have made his works best sellers, has added an- other charming story to his more than 40 books of prose and poetry. Alfred A. Knopf has been his pub- lisher through the years and now, at 76, Nathan has written a novel about two women and an author- the women being one in the older classification- and the other a 15- year-old girl. It is like a love affair with both. The author who comes to the Cape meets an elderly maiden. They strike up a friendship and in the course of its development he offers to make love. It is too late for the spinster. In the meantime the young girl, Mia, appears, undresses, asks for his love, he pleads against it-oh, the difference in age!-and the tale ends in tragedy. The elder is on the way to yield to her, there is a bus accident when the younger shoots a gun, the elder dies, the younger vanishes. To Thomas Baggot, the story- teller in "Mia," both were Mia, and the conflict in age is a con- cerning matter in a story of so many contrasts, all merging into a beautiful tale. Philosophically, as well as a fantasy, "Mia" is superb. The comments on the age factor by Emmeline the spinster, are sub- jects for interesting discussion. Experience is defined. Disillu- sion in youth is touched upon. The author in the story touches upon one of the timely questions of the time: "To say that God is dead," I declared, "is to say that He was once alive. But how can that be? It leads to nothing but confusion. If God, who created the universe, is dead, then the whole universe must be dead-or at least nothing but a memory ... coasting on in space . . . And in the instance of Emme- line's shyness when she refrained from love making, Thomas Baggot ruminates: "The hunger of youth for life can be translated into poe- try, but 40 years later it calls, rather, for an apology. I could sympathize with Emmeline, I knew only too well how she felt. For me, too there was no escape from the child in the grown-up bones." The younger, the 15-year-old, also met with dismay. "She saw the sorrow in my eyes," comments the older man, the author who was torn between two new opportuni- ties for love. "Mia" is a continuation o' Robert Nathan's skills in fantasy- writing. It's a fascinating tale by a man who, at 76, retains the power of expression. -P.S.
