22: Year of the Alphabet

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

(Copyright 1970 JTA, Inc.)

Israel is now marking its 22nd
birthday, the year of the alphabet.
The Hebrew alphabet has 22 let-
ters.
The Sinai Peninsula, where Is-
raeli soldiers are now ensconced
fighting the Egyptians, is sup-
posed to be the birthplace of most
of the world's alphabets, the He-
brew as well as the Greek and
Roman from which the English
alphabet is derived. The English
word alphabet is obviously kindred
to the Hebrew aleph beth. The Ten
Commandments also come from
the Sinai area and recently Israeli
troops located minerals and water
reserves in the Sinai desert, just
as their ancestors found manna.
