WASHINGTON ( J T A) — Sen.
George McGovern said Monday
that he stands by his July 20 pro-
posal that the United States sell
more combat jets to Israel and
that Israel refrain from using them
for forays over Arab territory.
The South Dakota Democrat
made his statement in a personal
letter to Joseph Polakoff of the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency's
Washington bureau, replying to a
sharp attack made on his pro-
posals by Rep. Barry Goldwater
Jr., Republican of Arizona.
"I have been informed that a
statement by Rep. Barry Gold

culated through the facilities of
the JTA," Sen. McGovern wrote.

NEW SYNAGOGUE AND SCHOOL

"We all hope that the war will
end very soon because no one
among us likes to fight. The
Arab people from the other side
are also human beings who want
to exist, and almost none of them
wants war. They also have fam-
ilies and children and want to
return safe and sound. Think
about this also, and do not hate
them.
"Be healthy and strong,
"Captain Israel Gootman."
On the same day that Goot-
man penned his reply, he died in
battle.
When his comrades collected
Capt. Gootman's belongings, they
found the letter he had prepared
for the children. It was sent on to
the students by the head of the
Israel Defense Office-Rehabilita-
tion, the department which honors
fallen soldiers. By then, Capt.
Gootman had been elevated, post-
humously, to the rank of major.
Along with the letter, Judah
Miron wrote this note to the stu-
dents:
"Dear Children,
"Enclosed is a letter from Is-
rael Gootman, who fell in battle
at the Suez Canal May 19, 1970,
and was laid to rest at the ceme-
tery of Kibutz Maagan.
"Captain Gootman was an ideal
leader of Jewish officers. He
fought for our existence and for
freedom for our country, but he
did not bear a grudge or hate
of our enemies. He saw that the
war is a passing phenomenon
until everlasting peace comes
and brotherhood reigns among
all mankind.
"The late Major Gootman loved
the children of Israel. In them
he saw the future and richness
of our country.
"You can use this letter as a
dear memory of an admirable
educator and officer.
"With great honor,
Judah Miron."

If it was not for the company of
fools, a witty man would often be
greatly at a loss.—La Rochefou-
cauld.
