Soviet Jewry Week to Be Observed Here THE

The Jewish Community Council
of Metropolitan Detroit has pro-
posed a "Soviet Jewry Week" in
Detroit beginning Oct. 18.
In a joint announcement to
Council member organizations.
Morris Lieberman, chairman of
the Community Council's com-
mittee on international concerns,
and Bernard Panush, chairman of
the subcommittee on Soviet Jewry,
stated:
"We are all familiar with the
remarkable phenomenon which oc-
curs on Simhat Torah outside the
Moscow Synagogue when thou-
sands of Jews—mostly young peo-
ple— openly proclaim their iden-
tity with their Jewish heritage and

the Jewish people.
"This event by young Jews in
Moscow, in direct and public de-
fiance of a regime which engages
in a form of cultural strangula-
tion aimed at its Jewish citizens,
has become an occasion for Ameri-
can Jews to express their solidar-
ity with the Jews of the Soviet
Union. We propose to express this
solidarity in Detroit with a week
of activities calling attention to
the current situation in the Soviet
Union."
Plans are being developed to in-
clude particpation of all segments
of the community. To insure that

Council will sponsor a seminar dur-
ing Soviet Jewry Week designed
to assist organizations in develop-
ing an ongoing year-round program
dealing with the issue of Soviet
Jewry.
In a related project, it was
announced that the North Ameri-

can Jewish Youth Council will
sponsor a "Youth Mobilization
for Soviet Jewry" in Washing-
ton, D.C., Oct. 11.12.

Local adult organizations which
have youth groups affiliated with
the Jewish Youth Council have
been asked to encourage partici-
pation in the Mobilization by pro-
viding financial assstance to youth
group members who will be at-
tending.
The Mobilization program will
include meetings with congress-
men, senators and State Depart-
ment officials, demonstrations at
key Washington locations, teach-
ins at the American University,
plus briefings and programatic
workshops on Sovet Jewry.

Mrs. Meir excludes Jerusalem.
Gen. Weizmann excludes parts
of the West Bank. Other Israel
leaders exclude the Golan
Heights. We want a timetable
for all the withdrawals, other-
wise we must conclude that Is-
rael does not want peace."
Heykal went on to argue that
peace was more in the interest of
Israel than of the Arabs. "Israel
should look further ahead to the
more distant future. She cannot
exist forever on her military pow-
er. If she wants to live in the
Middle East she must have peace.
We can afford to ,be defeated
many times and go on until we
win."
Heykal added that even if the
peace talks at the United Nations
are successful, the Palestinian
commandos will be free to continue
their struggle against Israel. tie
concluded the interview by stating
that while Russia wanted peace,
"We have made up our own minds
and without any prompting. We
had decided to accept the Rogers
proposals before President Nasser
went to Moscow."

ment, and head of the Palestine
