Princi- pal photography commenced on lo- cation in Vukovar, Yugoslavia, on July 16, with Abraham L. Polon- sky directing. No relative of Ro- man Polanski and a much older man, Abe Polonsky dropped out of Hollywood in 1950 during the Parnell Thomas investigation of the film industry, after having dis- tinguished himself as both screen writer and director. After almost 20 years of scribing under pen names, he made his comeback last year as the director of the Robert Redford starrer, "Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here." GRUP113 [LW at 8 MILL • U 8:41818 • RICHARD HARRIS made his di- rectorial debut in Israel, in a part of the world almost daily torn by strife and violence at the border of four Arab countries. Yet the Irish star feels that only in Israel could emerge such a remarkable and exciting film dealing with youth and life, living and love, entirely devoid of violence in any form. "Bloomfield" is a story of Israel. It is about ordinary yet vital human beings. It has no po- litical overtones and deals with the plight of an aging football hero worshiped by an 8-year- old boy (Kim Burfield) and ro- manced by a young woman (Aus- trian actress Homy Schneider, portraying a sabra). "In addition to capturing the color of the extraordinary city of Tel Aviv," says screen writer Wolf Mankowitz, who co-oroduced the film with England's John Hey- man. "'Bloomfield' emerges not simply as a story about a football player who is facing his last game but as a deceptively simple ac- count of the problems of a man in the crisis of his life as seen by a bov who must decide whether he will inevitably face that same crisis." Producer Heyman calls the film "a tiny plea for individ- uality in an age of conformity, a man's quest for freedom at any cost in the face of the enevitable." Otto Heller, the Prague-born cinematographer who fled to Eng- land when Hitler rose to power, photographed the motion picture on locations—at the "Bloomfield" football stadium in Tel Aviv, in an artist's flat in Jaffa, and on the streets and byways of the Holy Land. Heller, who is remem-' bered for his camera work on scores of film classics like Oli- vier's "Richard HI," "The Iperess File" and "Alfie," died in a Lon- don hospital shortly after return- ing from Israel, having not only photographed "Bloomfield" b u t made his only screen appearance in a one-line part as a cobbler in a Jaffa shop. During the 15 weeks "Bloom- field" was in production in Israel, almost all of the country's great character actors, such as Shraga Friedman, Yossi Graber and Gid- dim Shamir, made their bow in the English-language movie.
