really expect us to cooperate?"
"We say 'Peace,' and the echo
comes back from the other side,
'War'."
Reminded of the great emotional
response of Soviet Jewry to her
arrival in Moscow in 1948, Golda
rejoined: "If you had sent a
broomstick to Moscow, and said
it represented the state of Israel,
it would have received the same
welcome." -
"I don't want to have a bad
influence on anybody, but there's
no point in my giving up cigarettes
now. I won't die young."
"To young volunteers who came
to Israel during the Six-Day War,
and were preparing to return
home, Golda said: "You were
ready to die with us. Why don't
you want to live with us?"
"Do the Arabs need another
state? They already have 14. We
have only one."
"I am convinced that peace will
come to Israel and its neighbors
because the tens of millions of
Arabs need peace just as much
as we do. An Arab mother who
loses a son in battle weeps as
bitterly as any Israeli mother."
. . . and many more.

mind, and has given up worrying

DINING—

The perfect blend for a perfect evening. The

delightful, the food—well, we are mighty proud of

"Gal Friday" to Walter Winchell
on the West Coast
Hello Detroit ... this is the West
Coast pulse of Walter Winchell
and the right and left arm to
Turk Prujansky for 12 years . . .
coming your way with, as Walt
would say, many—many vignettes.
. . First off, just for the record—
WW is Jewish and never denies his
birthright ... As a matter of fact.
during the recording of the Jolson
and Durante albums, he insisted
that Turk call him "Velvet" (his
Jewish name) .. . and while we're
on these tapes, let me relate a
cute true story which WW told us
in between sessions . . . While
visiting his daughter, his 6-year-
old granddaughter came over to
him, sat on his lap, and in all
seriousness said, "Grandpa, isn't
it wonderful? Everybody loves me"
— then went on — "Mommy is a
Protestant—Daddy is a Catholic—
and you Grandpa are Jewish—and
you all love me — so everybody
loves me."
There never was a dull moment
at our recording studios in Holly-
wood . . . A day didn't pass that
Walter didn't bring along a few
celebrities to hear portions of the
Jolson album as we progressed.
. Margo and Eddie Albert (after
listening a while, Margo cried like
a baby), John Gary (at the time
just starting his career at the
Coconut Grove), Sandy Koufax,
Bo Bolinsky, etc. etc. I could go
on and on.
To coin a phrase—"To know
him is to love him"—this is WW,
the grand old man with a nose
for news . . - and still loving to
go into that of soft shoe routine
which, was his first love, hav-
ing started way back in Lou
Dockstader's Minstrels.
In between the parade of stars
that Walter brought in, your home
grown "Pied Piper of Detroit"—
Turk Prujansky—drew stars and
would-be talents from all corners
of the country . . . George Raft,
Mike Mazurki, Ernie Borgnine,
Harvey Stone, Sammy Davis Jr.,
etc. etc. . . - and the one in par-
ticular that stands out in my mind
was the day a motorcycle skidded
up onto the sidewalk. almost into
the door, bearing a rider wearing
a leather jacket, helmet and spec-
tacles ... Turk was ready to blow
his top—when he discovered this
"ruffian" was Jackie Coogan look-
ing for him . .
I could go on and on with epi-
sodes at the studio, but since only
just so much type fits into just so
much space, I will spot highlights
of various events that I know will
hit home with you Detroiters.
By the time this column is put
to bed . . . Danny Raskin and ',is
81/2-year-old son, Scott, will have
returned home from the coast .
They spent three days at the Dis-
neyland Hotel where Scott took
Danny on a whirlwind tour of fab-
ulous Disneyland ... Dad was sun-
burned and pooped while son Scott
was still raring to go . . . Back in
Los Angeles for two days, before
motoring to Las Vegas . . .
One of the many many former
Detroiters in LA was Sam Dictor,
retired now and recuperating from
a heart attack . . . On to Las
Vegas. and between former De-
troiters in Los Angeles and Las
Vegas, it poses only one question
. . . are there any Detroiters left
in Detroit? . . . At the Flamingo
Hotel as guests of VP Moe Miller,
it was down memory lane for him
and Turk as they mulled over old
times when they were kids to-
gether . . . and when Turk men-
tioned the dinner-dance to be held
Oct. 13 at the Raleigh House in
Detroit honoring Danny Raskin,
Moe asked to be reminded as he
will fly in ... and for you Detroit-
ers who still haven't picked up
your ducats . . . hurry and do so
. . . as many Angeleno and Vegas
friends are flying in .. .
For $15 a person there will be a
full dinner, liquor unlimited, danc-
ing and entertainment ... Max So-
sin (the Myron Cohen of Detroit)
will be the toastmaster ...Turk
Prujansky, celebrity to the celebri-
ties, will do the em-ceeing ... Mu-
sic by Hal Gordon and his orchestra
with Sammy Woolf vocalizing . .
Rumor has it that if Joey Bishop
is available, he may stop by . .
We had dinner the other evening
with Fifi D'Orsay, and she will fly
in to Detroit a few days prior to
her Oct. 14 lecture engagement at
the Fisher Theater so that she can
entertain at Danny's affair . . .
Your own "Saucy Sylvia" will be
there . . and whoever else is in
town is slated to perform ... Lots
of stars out here want to come in
for the big wing-ding . . wish I
could celebrate with you Danny,
as it's my birthday too but some-
one has to hold the fort down here
in LA . . . So, Danny, my spirit
will be with you on your night of
nights! . . . Remember the date
. . . Oct. 13 at Raleigh House.
HOLLYWOOD QUIPS ... Visited
with Jimmy Durante in his Beverly
Hills home . . . He hasn't been
feeling up to par ... but his young
8-year-old daughter Cee Cee perks
him up . . . Saw Phil Berle—asked
him if he heard from his brother
Frank lately—said, "Not a cent!"
. Jerry Lewis met Sammy Davis
Jr., who was dressed in a shiny
flashy outfit, in a Hollywood Res-
