The audience was described
by Gwertzman as "typical of
most of the infrequent Yiddish
productions here, mostly over
40, but with a noticeable num-
ber of well-dressed young cou-
ples in their 20s.

"From the whispering that went
on throughout the performances,
it was evident that a good deal
of translating was going on for
those who either did not know
Yiddish or had forgotten it," he
wrote.
Although the census of 19'70 has
not yet been published and there
are no exact figures as to how
many of the 3,000,000 Jews in the
Soviet Union can speak or under-
stand Yiddish, some 25 per cent
of Jews listed Yiddish as their
language in the 1959 census.
One of the complaints by Jews
against the Soviet government is
the lack of Yiddish- language
schools. Except for a single-sheet
Yiddish paper published in Biro-
bidzhan and one monthly Yiddish
journal and a few other publica-
tions, there are few cultural out-
lets.

Besides Shvartser's group,
there is another based in Vil-
nius, and both companies have
some difficulty getting actors
for their touring troupes. Gwertz-
man observed that ingenues in
"Beyond the Ocean" were acted
by women "who had long since
seen their 40th birthday."

Authorities allowed Shvartser's
group to use the modern Satire
Theater in he center of Moscow's ,
cultural area. Previously the group
played in a rundown theater in 1
the outskirts of the city or in a
less prestigious theater nearer the
center.
