A four-week pre-High Holy Day
Seminar arranged for Tuesday
evenings by Cong. Beth Achim for
its membership and the general
public will begin 8:15 p.m. Sept.
3 at the synagogue in Southfield.

"A Guided Tour Through the
High Holy Days" is sponsored by
all the affiliates of Beth Achim.

gether with Cantor Simon Ber-

dom of Malkizedek. The Midrash Monday through Friday.
(Genesis Rabba, 56) claims that
one of the sons of Noah called this
city "Shalem" and Abraham later
called it "Yeraeh." The combina-
tion of both names gives us the
name Jerusalem. The word "Sha-
lem" means peace or wholesome-
ness, while the word "Yeraeh"
means reverence. The combina-
tion, Jerusalem, thus means that
the city was a place of peace and
reverence. There are some critics
who claim that the original name
was "Jebus," a name which it was
later called when the "Jebusites"
owned it. Many have refuted this
argument on a number of grounds.

Jerusalem Temple Forbidden Area

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1970, JTA. Inc.)

It is forbidden to enter the loca-
tion originally occupied by the Holy
Temple, even today, when there is
no Temple there.
The area occupied by the Holy
Temple was one which commanded
reverence. This is based on a
passage in the Bible which states:
"Thou shall revere my Holy
Places." (Leviticus 19:30). This
was considered a way of revering
the Almighty himself. One of the
ways in which the place was
revered was that no one was al-
lowed to go there if he had no spe-
cial function to perform there in
fulfillment of .a Divine Command-
ment (Maimonides, Beth Habehi-
rah 7:2). Therefore, since no one
has any function to perform there
in fulfillment of a Divine Com-
mandment, it is considered disre-
spectful and a violation of a bib-
lical commandment to enter there.
Furthermore, anyone who had
been in contact with ritual impuri-
ties was never allowed to enter.
This, likewise, would preclude our
entering today.
