Goldberg Rejects bird's 'Cavalier 'Gesture;
Rockefeller Urges Immediate Plane Sale to Israel

BUFFALO, N.Y. (JTA)—Arthur
J. Goldberg. the Democratic-Lib-
eral candidate for governor, said
Tuesday that it was "a very bad
mistake" for Secretary of Defense
Melvin R. Laird to play down
Israel's charges of Soviet and
Egyptian standstill violations along
the Suez Canal.
Laird said in a television inter-
view Sunday that it was "very
difficult to prove or disprove" such
violations up to 18 hours before or
after the standstill ceasefire went
into effect, and that "the impor-
tant thing is for us to move for-
ward" with peace negotiations.
Goldberg, taking his campaign to
North Tonanwanda north of here,
agreed that initiation of the peace
talks was "very important," but
said "It would be very ill-advised
for our government to disregard
and brush aside violations of the
ceasefire by the United Arab Re-
public and its Soviet mentor."
