Sabbatical Year
According to the laws of the Torah it
is forbidden for a Jew who lives in
Eretz Ylsraei to work his land every
seventh year, the "sabbatical year." It
is also forbidden for him to eat .vege-
tables sown, or fruit picked that year.
What do the many religious farmers
in Israel do during the sabbatical
year? How will they grow food for
man and beast (cattle)?
Modern agricultural systems help the
farmer in Israel to keep the command-
ments of the sabbatical year, Firstly,
it is possible today to grow vegetables
not only in the ground, but also In wa-
ter in which chemicals are placed. It
is also possible to sow various vege-
tables early, before the sabbatical year.
These are not considered as fruits of
the seventh year, but as fruits of the
sixth year and may be used.
The commandment of the sabbatical
year is one of the commandments which
only inhabitants of Eretz Israel need
keep. Important rabbis in Israel and
the religious farmers are trying to had
ways to keep this ancient command-
ment in the new conditions of today.
