LETTER BOX

Senator Percy's Program
for Middle East Action

Editor, The Jewish News:
Recent developments in the
Middle East make it clear that
American and Israeli interests are
endangered by the escalation of
Soviet intervention in the region.
I share President Nixon's resolve
that neither United States nor Is-
raeli interests can be sacrificed
through timidity, inaction or
neglect.
For this reason I have under-
taken the following:
1. I have joined with a group
of 70 senators of both parties in
a letter to the President support-
ing his strong statements in his
television conversation of July 1
in which he said that the United
States would not allow the balance
of power to shift against Israel.
2. I am supporting an amend-
ment to the Military Procurement
Authorization Act which will
authorize the President "to trans-
fer to Israel, by sale. credit sale,
or guaranty, such aircraft, and
equipment appropriate to use,;
