Team Finds Site B elieved to Be From Talmudic Times TEL AVIV (JTA) - The Amer- ican Inter-University Archeological Expedition, digging at the Hirbet Shama, on Mount Meron near Sa fed. announced it has uncovered what is believed to have been a Jewish settlement dating back to talmudic times. Several buildings, including one believed to have been a synago- gue. coins and artifacts were un- covered. The 80-man expedition, financed by the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C., is headed by Prof. Robert Bull of the Albright Institute of Jerusalem and Dr. 701711 1! Eric Meiers of Duke University, Durham, N.C. There was one confrontation between members of the expedi- tion and religious zealots who believe burial caves in the area are sacred-the daughter-in-law of the sage Shamai is believed to have been buried in one of them. After being reassured that the caves would not be desecrated by use as storage areas for tools and supplies, the zealots, led by Rabbi Amram Blau of the Neturei Karta group, left and the excavations continued. Team JERUSALEM-Research on the environmental phenomena of the sharav ( a hot, dry desert wind) in Israel, and on new ways to cure people sensitive to its effect is cur- rently being carried out at the de- partment of applied pharmacology at the Hebrew University. The re- search team is led by the depart- ment's head, Prof. Felix Gad Sul- man. Common reactions to the sharav include feelings of tension, irrit- ability, depression, h e a d a c he s, shortness of breath and various "allergic" conditions. Previous research has shown that as the sharav approaches, the ioni- zation of the atmosphere under- goes a radical change, with the number of positively-charged elec- trical particles increasing sharply as compared with the negatively- charged particles. In the current project, the re- search team spent a year check- ing the ionization of the atmos- phere in Jerusalem and, concur- rently, the influence of this ioniza- tion on the human body. Results of the research are now being applied at an outpatient clinic in the Russian Compound where suf- ferers from the sharav are being treated. The sharav is regarded by the research team as an important environmental factor which may well produce highly undesirable results among between 20-30 per cent of the entire population of Israel. Jewish, Black Merchants Deal Through Council PHILADELPHIA (JTA) - A "business marriage" was arrang- ed by the Jewish Community Rela- tions Council when a kosher meat and grocery business was sold by its Jewish owner to a black meat cutter. The "marriage" was an accom- modation for both parties. This was the second such sale arranged by JCRC since the release of its sur- vey "Jewish Businessmen Operat- ing in Selected Inner City Areas of Philadelphia." Three more sales are pending.
