Get Some Patching

It is doubtful whether The Roths-
childs will like "The Rothschilds"
as it Was presented at the Fisher
Theater Tuesday night. By the
time they see the production—if
they ever do — it'll no doubt be
patched, corrected, changed, ad-
justed to facts and realities.
As shown here it is faulty. It is
based on Frederick Morton's "The
Rothschilds" but that volume, too,
was criticized for some factual
shortcomings.
Actually, the Jerry Bock-Sheldon
Harnick-Sherman Yellen produc-
tion at the Fisher has a lot to rec-
ommend it. But a major fault is
that the producers, perhaps influ-
enced and motivated by "Fid-
dler," did not recognize that the
situation in Frankfurt, Germany.
was different from that in Kasri-
levke, Poland.
The opening scene, showing the
brutal treatment of an entrant into
the ghetto and the greeting to him
(Mayer Rothschild) with the song
"Jew, Do Your Duty," is historic-
ally correct. But in the play the
authors and producers failed to in-
dicate that among the early Roths-
childs, as among the later ones,
there was a Jewish devotion as
strong as the desire for money.
There was a religious fervor which
is only partially referred to much
later in the musical.
Sure, the Rothschilds are equat-
ed with money, but their history
was not all money, and that is
hardly indicated sufficiently in
the new play.
Furthermore, the Frankfurt Jews
were not altogether like the shtetl
People and the portrayal may have
to be altered.
The play needs patching and it
undoubtedly will get it before it
can hope to have the success of a

Rabbi Marc H. Tanenbaum, na-
tional director of the interreligious
affairs department of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, declared
that the achievement of the settle-
ment was "also significant as a
model of sophisticated, effective
cooperation between Catholics,
Protestants and Jews joining hands
in the common work of social jus-
tice." He stated:
"Particular tribute should be
paid to members of the Roman
Catholic Bishops Committee on
Farm Labor, the Protestant mi-
grant workers ministry and to the
various boards of rabbis and Jew-
ish laymen, all of whom played
decisive roles in conciliating the
grape growers and the farm work-
ers."
In the Jewish community, for
example, Rabbi Tanenbaum said,
"Hundreds of synagogues and tem-
ples across the nation refused to
use nonunion grapes for sacra-
mental wine or for the decoration
of the suka, the booth which is
usually adorned with fruits and
vegetables during the Jewish Festi-
val of Tabernacles."
