DICTIONARIES ARE bought and
sold every day . . . Yet many of
us lack the knowledge of good
word meanings . . . Dave Draznin

tells about the young student who
overheard the word pregnant . . .
He asked the teacher what it meant
and was promptly told, "To carry
a child." . . "Now suppose you

give us a sentence with the word

in it," suggested the teacher . . .
The youngster gulped and answer-
ed, "The fireman climbed a ladder

into a burning orphanage and came
down pregnant."

MANNIE MACKIE reports that
Alan Kaczander of the Maurice
Zieger Bnai Brith Bowling League
will try to go over that "jinx" 256
high mark this season .. . He hit
256 in 1967-68, in 1968-69 and again
in 1969-70.

PEGGY ELSON is correct spell-
ing of gal I mentioned in last
week's column . . . She is of the
well known Elson Bakery family
and Judge Marvin Frankel's right-
hand gal.

A FAVORITE PASTIME of Arnie
Blau, Oak Park Councilmen Sid
Shayne and Mert Colburn and
Judge Frankel, is trying to stump
each other on sports questions . . .
Arnie is "Mr. Answers" when it
conies to sports of yesterday and
today . Harvey Zuckerberg tried
to 'stump Arnie on the number worn
by "Skeeter" Webb, one-time short-
stop of the Detroit Tigers . .
which sounded like "How many
blades of grass in a lawn?" . . .
Amazement of all amazements-
Arnie guessed his uniform number!

CALLING CLIVE CANTOR . . .
Remember back in 1951 when you
came into Sidney-Hill Health Club
wringing wet? . . . You had just
had the scare of your life after
ducking bullets at a downtown S. S.
Kresge store where a bandit and a
policeman decided to shoot it out
. . . Asked where you were while
all the excitement was going on.
you replied, "I was under some
counter thinking about all the bad
things I'd ever done in my life. Me
scared? And how!"

A DAPPER LOCALITE—one of
the best-dressed men in town, came
to collect his 6-year-old daughter
at a birthday party . . . Taking
hold of her hand to guide her across
the street, he remarked that her
hands seemed mighty sticky . .
"Yours would, too," she informed
him, if you had a piece of lemon
pie and chocolate eclair inside
your muff."

PHIL GLICKMAN of Carpet
Fair, told carpeting associate Leo
Schoenfeld of a mutual friend
whose son came home from school
and scowled at his father . . "I
got in trouble today, dad, and its
all your fault." . . . The father
wanted to know why, and the boy,
still scowling, replied, "Remember
I asked you how much $100,000
was?" . . . His pop said that he
did and demanded to know what of
it . . . "Well," the youngster told
him, "a helluva lot ain't the
answer!"

OVERHEARD at a downtown
theater at the sneak preview of a
new motion picture . . "That one
is ready for television right now."

STEPPING INTO A suburban
taxicab in RoS, a1 Oak last week,
Rose Silverberg told the driver her
address in Southfield . . . The
driver swung out into traffic . . .
and at the same time asked, "Do
you want the radio, lady, or should

we just talk?"
