Arab Deputy Speaker, Presiding
Over Knesset for the First Time,
Urges Arabs Make Peace with Israel

THE DETROIT JEWISH HEWS

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Asher Ben
Natan, a Hagana veteran who
served until the end of last year as
Israel's ambassador to West Ger-
many, has been appointed ambas-
sador to France succeeding Walter
Eytan, it was announced here.
Ben Natan, a former director
general of the Israel Defense Min-
istry, was posted to Bonn from
1965-69, a tenure that was regard-
ed as highly successful for rela-
tions between the two countries.
His assignment to Paris will put
him in what for Israel is the sec-
ond most sensitive diplomatic post
outside Washington, D. C.
France's close involvement in
efforts to bring about a Middle
East settlement are colored by that
nation's sharp shift in attitude to-
ward Israel since the June, 1967
Arab-Israeli war. Ben Natan, a
native of Vienna, was active in the
procurement of arms for Haganah
during and after World War II and
was an organizer of illegal Jewish
immigration to Palestine.

JERUSALEM (JTA)—For the first time an Arab presided over a
meeting of the Knesset.
Seif Eddin Zouabi, 56, of Nazareth, who last year had been elected
deputy speaker, sat on the speaker's dais July 28 and urged Arabs
beyand the borders to make peace with Israel.
Zouabi opened the Knesset by saying "It was my privilege to have
been a member of the Israeli parliament since its inception. I 'am
prpud of this. I have often urged the leaders of the Arab states not to
think of war because war does not solve any problems, it only com-
plicates them."
Minister of Commerce and Industry Joseph Sapir, who spoke after
Zouabi, congratulated him and said he should like to regard Zouabi's
role as speaker as "a good omen for the future, and I wish you
success in fulfilling your tasks."
Zouabi is now a Labor Party candidate for the office of deputy
minister of agriculture.

Miss Kitchen of Israel

By MOSHE H. ZIRIN

One path to the tourist's heart
is through his stomach, and, there-
fore, Israel, as a tourist's coun-
try, would like to promote the culi-
nary skill and fancy dishes in its
restaurants.
Recipes for fancy and unknown
dishes are abundant in Israeli
kitchens, especially among those
who immigrated from remote and
unfrequented countries; the prob-
lem is how to make the knowledge
of these recipes available to the
interested parties. The answer—
competition.
And so, every year, amateur
cooks are invited to participate in
a national contest for the title of
Miss Kitchen, Israel-1 it e r a 11 y,
Queen of the Kitchen. In this con-
test participants prepare their
specialties from scratch in front
of the panel of judges.
The more exotic and different
dishes are usually presented by
the non-sabras, especially the
more recent arrivals. Here is a
rare case, indeed, where the Israeli
veterans have the lower hand.
The Haifa regional contest, how-
ever, was won hands down by a
sabra, a native of the remote and
old town of Metulla, on the Leba-
nese border. The winning dish,
named Gilu Ha-Glilim, is a new

kind of blintze, where the dough
is stuffed with a fried Israeli-breed
fish.
The winner—Queen of the Kitch-
en, Haifa—is of some interest. The
name: Ya'acov Lishansky. Yes,
the "Queen" is a man; in fact, he
is a real he-man. Mr. Lishan-
sky, 57, was the military comman-
der of the Galilee, and now oper-
ates a garage-gasoline station.
In a country where the prime
minister is a woman, it is perfectly
legitimate that men should make
some inroad into the previously
women-only territory—the family
kitchen. That is not to say that
very many males in Israel are po-
tential candidates to the crown of
the Queen of the Kitchen; indeed,
Mr. Lishansky is more of an ex-
ception. But, then, not many
women in Israel are potential

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Rep. J.
Herbert Burk e, Republican of
Florida, has reported that a poll
of his district taken earlier this
year showed 74.2 per cent of his
constituents favored an increase
in U.S. military assistance to Is-
rael.
A total of 582 per cent were
against the reduction of U.S. arms
aid to Israel; and most of the dis-
trict was in favor of anything that
might bring peace, or at least
lessening of U.S. involvement, but
not at the expene of U.S. mili-
tary support of Israel.
Rep. Burke said 9L9 per cent
of his district voted "yes" on
whether there should be face-to-
face negotiations between the
Arabs and Israel, and a little more
t h a n two-thirds of the district
voted in favor of negotiations for
a peace settlement under the di-
rection of the Four Powers.
Slightly more than 75 per cent
voted for U.S. neutrality in the
Arab-Israeli dispute.

`Story

MINNEAPOLIS (JTA) — The
Mount Sinai hospital has become
the first non-governmental institu-
tion to receive "major affiliation"
staus as a teaching hospital from
the University of Minnesota medi-
cal school. The Minneapolis hos-
pital has been one of seven area
hospitals affiliated with the school.
The designation made the hospital
the medical school's fifth major
teaching affiliate. School officials
said the designation was in line
with school plans to help relieve
the -shortage of physicians in the
area by increased enrollment. The
arrangement means that more of

Final Examinations
Marked by Computer

Most of the final examinations
given by Bar-flan University were
marked this year for the first time
by the university's IBM computer
which enabled the results to be
known two days after the exami-
nations.
An o t her interesting computer
project at Bar-Ilan researches the
personalities of the weak charac-
ters in Shakespeare's plays as re-
flected by their own speech. The
research, arranged under the guid-
ance of Prof. Murray Roston and
Dr. Joseph Reif, is based on the
examination of certain words with-
in the text of the plays.
