BONN—Fritz Kortner, actor and
director, died in Munich July 23
at age 78.
Before World War II, Mr. Karl-
ner was famous in Germany as a
stage and film actor. He returned
from exile in 1947 and won acclaim
as well as instigated controversy
as a film producer and stage di-
rector.
Driven from Germany by the
Nazis, as a non-Aryan, Mr. Kort-
ner lived in the U.S. for nearly 10
years. He acted in a number of
movies and collaborated with the
journalist, Dorothy Thompson, to
write a play on emigrants which
was produced by Ervin Piscator in
New York.
He also was co-author of "The
Strange Death of Adolph Hitler,"
a play later made into a movie.
Jesse Shwayder, 88,
of Samsonite Company
DENVER — Jesse Shwayder,
founder of the Samsonite Corpora-
tion, leading manufacturers of lug-
gage, died July 24 at age 88.
Among his survivors are a broth-
er and sister, both of Detroit, Ben-
jamin H. Shwayder and Mrs. Bur-
ton (Leiba) Cbmage.
Mr. Shwayder was president of
Samsonite, which also make casual
outdoor furniture and toys, until
the early '605 when he became
chairm i of the board.
He started the company in 1910
as Shwayder Trunk Manufactur-
ing Company in a small store in
Denver.
A Samsonite plant was in opera-
tion in Detroit from 1928 until 1966
under the direction of Mr. Shway-
der's son, King, who lived in De-
troit during that period.

Albert Schiller, Age 71,
NEW YORK — Albert Schiller,
retired typographer and creator of
type pictures entirely composed of
type ornaments, died July 22 at
age 71.
His type picture have been ex-
hibited in museums and universi-
ties here and abroad. A large
exhibit took place last February
in the Los Angeles Public Library
to which he gave the pictures for
its permanent collection.

wife of Louis Untermeyer, a noted
poet in her own rights, died Mon-
day in her New York apartment
at the age of 84.
Widely acclaimed as a poet, she
