Israel Film Gets 'R' Rating at Cannes Show;
`Tsimmes Talent' Has Numerous Revelations

By GEORGE FRIEDMAN
(Copyright 1970, JTA, Inc.)
Any lingering doubts about Is-
rael's coming of age should be dis-
pelled by the "R" rating given by
the Motion Picture Association of
America to a newly imported
Israeli film, "The Dreamer." An
"R" rating bars persons under a
certain age, usually 16 or 17, unless
accompanied by an adult. The dis-
tributors and productr Ami Artzi
unsuccessfully sought a "GP" rat-
ing—admission to all, with parental
guidance advised for minors.
"The Dreamer," Israel's entry
at the recent 1970 Cannes Film
Festival, is said to contain a love
scene, photographed in silhouette,
in which a young seductress places
a boy's hand on her breast.
Perhaps Artzi and associates
should consider themselves for-
tunate after all. Imagine what
would have happened if Cecil B.
DeMille had made the movie. He
would have called it "Sex in the
Sinai" and it would have gotten

requiring foreign film distributors
to spend 40 per cent of their Is-
raeli earnings there, a practice
followed in a number of other
small nations.
A better solution might be the
production of more films about Mid
East and related current events
and personalities, especially if the
rights to appropriate but already
used titles can be obtained. Con-
sider the possibilities:
Gamal Abdel Nasser in "Good
Neighbor Sam";
King Hussein in "Here Comes
Mr. Jordan";
Gold Meir in "The Lady Fights
Back";
Nahum Goldmann in "Boy, Did
I Get a Wrong Number";
David Ben-Gurion in "The Lion
in Winter";
William P. Rogers in "The
Juggler";
Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew
in "Butch Cassidy and the Sun-
dance Kid";
