Births

Soviets Unload Military Equipment in
Libya; Israel and U.S. Apprehensive

(In Cairo, a military spokesman
reported that two Egyptian sol-
diers were injured Sunday during
a two hour air raid by Israeli
planes that lasted for two hours in
the northern and southern sections
of the Suez Canal.)
Four youngsters who came to
Kibbutz Ashdot Yaacob to watch
a film were injured July 22 when
the Kibbutz was attacked by mor-
tar shells fired from east of the
Yarmoukh Rive r. The four —
three pupils of the Dimonah Sec-
ondary Schools on vacation in the
Beisan Valley settlement and a
member of a youth group in Ash-
dot Yaacob were watching the film
in the Kibbutz as the shells start-
ed to explode. The siren was
sounded and the screening was
discontinued as all members of
the settlement went into shelters.
The youths, however, decided they
wanted to watch the real life
scenario and were injured from
splinters of a shell. Only one
needed hospitalization.
Two more Israeli soldiers were
killed along the canal — Lietenant
Moshe Kichel, 22, of the Ghetto-
Fighter's Kibbutz, and Sergeant
Yochai Giveol, 23, of Kibbutz Gi-
vat Brenner. A third fatality was
that of First Sergeant David Sof-
fer of Kibbutz Dafnah.
Sgt. David Soffer, 21, of Kibbutz
Dafna, was killed in fire ex-
changes in Suez Canal action.
Four other soldiers and one civil-
ian were reported injured. Israeli
jets continued their intermittent
attacks on Egyptian canal targets.
including infantry positions and
anti-aircraft gun emplacements.
Israeli spokesmen denied an
Egyptian claim that a Skyhawk
jet had been "hit."
The Beisan Valley settlements
of Maoz Haim, Yardena and Mar
Ruppin were attacked by mortar
first from Jordanian territory.
Chief of Staff Haim Bar Lev
and the heads of various branches
of General Headquarters visited
the Gaza Strip while touring the
town of Gaza and refugee camps.

Defense Minister Moshe Da-
yan piloted a Phantom jet for

an hour receiving instructions
on emergency procedures and
landing safely. Gen. Mordechai
Hod, the Air Force commander,
piloted another Phantom along-
side.

Reports from Amman said the
Palestinian guerrillas have again
accused the Hussein government
of failing to carry out its part of
their July 7 agreement providing,
among other things, for guerrilla
freedom-of-action. Concurrently, the
El Fatah newspaper indicated
that the friction between the Ar-
my and the guerrillas is increas-
ing, in the form of "shooting in-
cidents" in Amman.

Egypt on Monday lost two
and possibly three Soviet-made
MIG-17s in air battles over the
Suez Canal as Egyptian planes
attacked Israeli canal positions
for the first time in several
weeks.

The Egyptians struck in the
northern sector twice injuring
four Israeli soldiers. Israeli planes
all of which returned safely, inter-
cepted the MIGs at low altitude,
downing two of them. A third was
believed to have been hit from
the ground, but was not seen fall-
ing. The pilots of the first two
MIGs bailed out before the jets
crashed in Egyptian territory.
Israeli planes attacked Egyptian
canal positions for the 67th
straight day Tuesday, hitting fort-
ifications, outposts, and mortar
and artillery position in northern
sector. Tuesday morning, Is-
raeli planes struck terrorist bases
and Army positions in Jordanian
territory opposite the Beisan and
Jordan Valleys, in response to at-
tacks last night on Kfar Ruppin
and Israeli patrols. All planes re-
turned safely from the 30-minute
mission.
(In Washington, State Depart-
ment spokesman Robert J. Mc-
Closkey declined comment on a
Newsweek magazine report, which
Israel had denied, that Israeli
units have captured key parts of
a SAM-3 missile. The magazine
attributed the information to U.S.
intelligence sources.)
