Detroiter in School
to 'Strengthen Soul'
in Service Work
Mrs. Alison Goldbaum, com-
munity affairs associate with the
Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit is a pupil in
a unique school designed to
"strengthen the Jewish soul in
Jewish communal work."
That is how Dr. Alfred Gotts-
chalk, dean of the California
School of the Hebrew Union Col-
lege, described the idea when it
was first broached as a school of
Jewish Communal Service.
Opened by the college last year,
the school, with Gerald B. Bubis
as director, is now conducting the
second of two eight-week summer
sessions required for students to
receive certificates in Jewish com-
munal studies.
Some plan to continue their stu-
dies under a directed research pro-
gram so that they may receive
master of arts degree in Jewish
communal studies from the He-
brew Union College.
Classes are being held through
Aug. 27 on the campus of the
University of Southern Califor-
nia, and the students have come
from all over the United States
and Canada.
